In a better instructor match, who ya got?!

I’m going with Olinto all the way. While both are very intelligent and know their stuff, I think Olinto brings more to the table to help with the exam. Gearty will tell you little things here and there and have you re-write the same thing over and over to drive home a point. It works. It drives home the point. The problem is that it often doesn’t really help me. I’ll remember it, but I’ll never use it to help me with any questions. For example, in REG, I can’t tell you how many times Gearty used the “Non-taxable, None, NBV” thing to refer to an event being non-taxable and having no income if you use the net book value as the basis. He said to remember the three N’s. For whatever reason, I never once actually thought of that or applied that when doing any questions. I really honestly don’t even know the relevance. If you use an item’s NBV as its basis it’s never taxable??? I don’t even know. I never really even thought about it.

Don’t get me wrong, I think Gearty is a good instructor; just slightly below Olinto.

Both are great and I wouldn’t have passed the two exams I did (and hopefully the third today) without them. Gearty carried me through AUD and I thought he was great. I also thought he was great for REG especially for corporate taxes, where I generally struggled.

But with Olinto, one way or another, I’ll be working the practice questions and for at least one or two, I’ll be struggling with the answer and think back to a little sidenote mentioned. Perhaps Olinto looks at the practice questions and incorporates in what the lecture didn’t cover? Maybe Gearty doesn’t? Who knows?

Both are my best friends and have been since I started the CPA. I will gladly send them both $1.00 if I pass all four on the first try!

“BAE BAE” was in FAR for governmental accounting.

He was at his most annoying there, but it stuck!

Ugh I used Becker for AUD, REG, BEC, and a chapter and a half for FAR. I couldn't listen to either one of them anymore. I switched over to Yaeger after failing BEC twice with Becker. I would much rather listen to Cindy from Yaeger ANY DAY over Peter or Tim. Something is wrong with Tim for sure…ok GANG! Lets dive into the material! I don't wanna dive anywhere with you!

What was that all about when Peter Olinto picked up his kid into the screen shot?? His shirt said something about a tax deduction. What I did find funny was I think in REG when Peter Olinto was talking about insanity or something and used Tim Gearty as an example and said “Lets say Tim Gearty dove off a roof wearing a Superman outfit…” HAHAHAH that was pretty funny!

    AUD - 84; REG - 90; BEC - 79; FAR - 75; ALL DONE!!

Olinto is better on the eyes but he makes you highlight EVERYTHING. The scene with his kid was really awkward, like the kid was squirmy and uncomfortable.

Gaerty makes my skin crawl when he says “MACRS”. Maybe it's right, but that's not how we pronounce it in the south.

Dennis Greene on the FAR Becker Final Review was like an Al Pacino version of a CPA, only he spit when he talked. I mean stuff comes flying out of his mouth.

I feel like Gearty makes you high light a lot more. Olinto is more sparingly.

Gearty's approach basically seemed like…read this whole area as it is important.

    CPAWannaBe,

I saw Dennis Green spit out about a dime-sized piece of something in the Final Review. I went back and replayed it a few times…why, I'm not sure.

I say “MAKE-ers” with the stress on the “MAKE.” Gearty says “MACK-ers” I think. Hah.

I think Gearty makes you highlight more. Olinto is all about underlining and starring. I strictly highlight no matter what they say. Sometimes I will underline during the lecture if I feel it's something that's pretty important. When I read the text later on, then I go underline crazy.

Funny how we all have our different styles and preferences. I personally like Olinto a lot. I think he really does a nice job explaining concepts.

I say “MAKE-ers”. Even my professor in Becker Fast Pass thought his pronunciation was unusual.

whitesox, I know the spit was gross. I don't know if that bothered me or the fact that I tried to pause it and see what it was bothered me more.

I also tried to tell what it was. I never did figure it out.

    I'm also a “MAKE-ers” guy.

I think I learn a lot better from Gearty for the math sections. He's slower – which better suits my learning style. Olinto tends to go into every single thing and by the end of each lecture, theres too much material for me to absorb…
