    Hi Jeff,

I’ve recently gotten engaged and will be married in a few months. I work in public accounting and am registered with NY state to take the CPA exam. I haven’t passed any parts of the exam. However, I will be moving to Texas after I am married and was wondering if i am eligible to take the exam in Texas? Also, would it be possible for the NY board can transfer all of my documents to Texas board so that i can take the exam in Texas and be registered there? Since i have worked in NY for two years at a public accounting firm, will i have problems being licensed in the state of Texas as i have my audit experience from NY?

Please help! It’s so stressful trying to figure all of this out while planning a wedding. I appreciate it! Thank you!

Passing the exam is passing the exam, no matter where you take each section. You might have to re-apply to take it in Texas but that shouldn't be a problem if you already qualified in NY. And I think public accounting experience also counts no matter where you worked.

Lastly, stop stressing and enjoy your upcoming wedding!!!

    REG (7/7/11) 75
    FAR (7/28/11) 76
    BEC (8/27/11) 81
    AUD (10/15/11, 1/20/12) 63, 91

    DONE!!!

I believe that you are able to sit for the exam anywhere in the world. So, I'd recommend that you sit for the exams in Texas but get licensed through NY. Then after you're licensed it's a lot easier to transfer your license to TX. The Texas Board takes a very long time to process your paperwork so I don't know how long it would take for you to apply to get licensed through Texas.

I agree with CPAhopefulTX. I would just continue with the process through NY and then once you are licensed in NY, I would transfer it to TX. I am from TN and moved to TX. I did the same thing you are asking about and it was a headache.

    BEC-Passed
    AUD-Passed
    REG-Passed
    FAR-Passed (I AM DONE!!! THANK U LORD!!!!)

A secondary advantage to sticking it out through New York is that it looks like NY is a NASBA state, while the TX Board reports scores itself a few days after the NASBA states report scores.

If you don't have to go through the Texas Board, I wouldn't. They say everything is bigger in Texas, well so is your wait time on all things CPA

I don't know about the wait time in Texas, but the main thing to look at is whether you meet the testing requirements, since each state is different. I'm assuming that NY requirements are equal or possibly higher than TX, so I'm sure you're fine.

Here's the link to the TX board's website – this page lists exam requirements.

    https://www.tsbpa.state.tx.us/exam-qualification/examination-requirements.html

FYI – If you test in another state or get certified in another state, then transfer to TX, it costs $300. So, if you know that you want to be certified in TX, you might consider doing that up front, instead of transferring later for additional cost.

But, overall, I think it's not a big deal either way. Not enough to stress about.

Save your stress for the studying for the exam!

    AUD - 75 - 5/29/14

    Praise Jesus! I'm done!!
