May I say I hate Tim Gearty? And MERRY CHRISTMAS

I just finished my R1 video, following the NINJA guidelines, cause usually I just skipped the video parts.

After almost 3 hours lecture, all I can remember is his stupid “HIGHLIGHT”, “HIGHLIGHT”, “HIGHLIGHT” “HIGHLIGHT” “HIGHLIGHT” “HIGHLIGHT” “HIGHLIGHT” “HIGHLIGHT” “HIGHLIGHT” “HIGHLIGHT” “HIGHLIGHT” “HIGHLIGHT” “HIGHLIGHT” “HIGHLIGHT” “HIGHLIGHT” “HIGHLIGHT” “HIGHLIGHT” “HIGHLIGHT” “HIGHLIGHT” “HIGHLIGHT” “HIGHLIGHT” “HIGHLIGHT” “HIGHLIGHT” “HIGHLIGHT” “HIGHLIGHT” “HIGHLIGHT” “HIGHLIGHT” “HIGHLIGHT” “HIGHLIGHT” “HIGHLIGHT” “HIGHLIGHT” “HIGHLIGHT” “HIGHLIGHT” “HIGHLIGHT” “HIGHLIGHT” “HIGHLIGHT” “HIGHLIGHT” “HIGHLIGHT” “HIGHLIGHT” “HIGHLIGHT” “HIGHLIGHT” “HIGHLIGHT” .

Of course I didn’t paint my book into neon yellow! But I sincerely feel that I didn’t learn a s**t from the video.

If there is any merciful person here doesn’t not hate him, would like please kindly recommend your tactics regarding his video lectures?

I don’t know if I can tolerate him any more.

Hopefully I’m not the first or the last person feel this way.

Yep there are other topics here about Tim … here is one 🙂

Does Tim Gearty get a cut of every highlighter sold?

When I first got Becker and had Tim for AUD I felt very depressed listening to him… I switched to Rogers as i liked this teach style a lot more.

Good Luck! and Merry Christmas 🙂

Switch to Yager. Their lecture videos are excellent. The audio series is good too. I had the same issue with Becker, it is not that Becker is bad, every one has a different learning style, for me Yager works. Read the wiley book too with Yager Review.

I actually learned to love Tim. Yes he comes off as very dry at times, the highlighting can be excessive, and if you start hearing every “again” he says you may go crazy. But I actually believe there is a method to his madness, that Tim himself is fully aware of. If you get tired of highlighting, try underlining and circling key words and phrases that Tim points out in red like Olinto does. I would go through the lectures once with just highlighting and listening, then would try to make great notes for each section using the highlights as points of emphasis, but still noted other items Tim might have only quickly mentioned. After taking notes, I would move on the multiple choice and so on. Eventually, I was cracking up at Tim cause he was just so over the top nerdy and ridiculous (ie bae bae, am i sad mr firsala, and my all time fav “I would really depreciate it”. I learned to really “depreciate” Tim and embraced his style and passed. The system seems to work if you make the effort.

Thanks for recommending Yaeger~~ Too bad the becker thing is reimbursed by my company so I will live with it.

And now I totally understand why Becker always gives away highlighter on their presentation, on career fair and everywhere. Because Gearty, their chief editor, is a HIGHLIGHTER FREAK!!!

I think I will start to underscore and make limited notes for my R2.

@pscweb34 Thank you for your methodology. I will try my best not smashing my screen~~

I actually liked Tim at first (and that would be R1-R4). I couldn’t stand listening to him later, but that might not be his fault (I really hated AUD and FAR).

Highlight very selectively, that’s my advice. Tim will tell you to highlight the whole paragraph – find the keyword, circle/underscore. My guideline was the question – “is it going to help me in the review later or am I going to be super annoyed and distracted, because half of the book is yellow?”. So it became much easier to filter. Tim didn’t get any less annoying, though.

Also, I’m a big fan of color-coding, so I used different fine point pens.

Red for the first round – making notes that Tim or Peter tell you to make (I would skip on noting anything that is obvious to me).

Blue – second round, when I would read the book and make my own notes and highlight/underscore the point I find important (this is for before/during working MCQs).

Green – third round, points that I keep forgetting or the ones that I missed during reworking MCQs for the final review.

You don't have to like him but he helps you get the job done if you do what he says and that is all that matters at the end of the day.

The obvious answer seems to be skip the videos. Even if the ninja notes recommends watching videos you have the freedom to skip that part if you deem your videos ineffective. Use the time saved to go over the book more slowly and thoroughly. If you skip the videos you do pick up an extra 40 hours for multiple choice questions and book learning.

I spoke to an ancient wise man who sent me on a mushroom induced journey through an ancient forest to find the key to passing the CPA exam. A talking spider monkey told me to throw the last of my drinking water in the dirt to find what I was looking for. So I followed his instructions and the following message appeared in the soil:

"Do 5000 multiple choice questions for each section"

I didn't watch the videos for AUD, but for anything that has calculations/formulas the videos can be helpful. IMHO when the material is all conceptual it's just Tim/Peter reading out of the book and telling you to highlight this…underline that. I didn't mind Tim, but I could see him wearing on someone…especially once you get to your last section! I'll never forget SIRAGE, BAE BAE, etc!!!

I like him as a professor just fine. I do wish he'd give up on highlighting everything – and then underlining or circling the REALLY important stuff. Why doesn't he just highlight the REALLY important stuff? And why would anyone need to highlight every single heading? They're already headings – in bold.

Does anyone actually look at their book and say, “F this topic, if the heading isn't highlighted, I don't care!”

@Study Monk Thank you for your color coding methodology!! I myself love color coding and labeling and all that index thing. Only difference is blue is for my first round, red is for my second round and green is for my 3rd round, lol~ But I'm still glad finding someone who is as crazy as I am.

Thank you all for replying my post~

that is the point and why tim says what he says. He will always tell you “i want you to my voice during the test” which you will and therefore he will talk to you and tell you the answer during the exam. Bottom line, It Works.

Awkward. I don't mind Tim, and I'm looking forward to Peter.

I took Tim for FAR, AUD, and REG and even though he might be boring at times, i do think he does an excellent job at explaining most of the material. Peter is more entertaining, to say the list, but i do think that TIM is an amazing and very knowledgeable instructor. Thanks Tim!

I don't mind the highlighting as much as his constant use and abuse of the word “again”. This especially bothers me when he uses the word again before every item in a list. What do you meeeeean “again” this is the first time you've ever said this!!!!! I'm sure he has listened to his own lectures over the year so I cannot understand how he still hasn't fixed this tick…
