Maybe you should quit CPA - Page 2

Ok, this post is going to be a bit of a rant, complaining…

But the other day my “well-meaning” friend suggested I quit CPA after hearing how I had gotten sick after working long hours, trying to study, etc.

This just ENRAGES me. I think it wouldn’t bother me so much if it was the first time I had negative feedback about this pursuit.

    General comments, similar experiences?

The best comeback from one of my friends was if they don’t support me doing CPA, they are haters and don’t pay my bills.

Also, a becker teacher for god’s sake, said it didn’t make sense for me to do it because I am already in industry.

A VP at my company said that experience and performance is more important that CPA.

I could probably go on…but I have enough problems finding the motivation to spend hours on end studying while i’m learning a new stressful job at year end, and I don’t understand why anyone would say anything negative after i’m already HALFWAY through the process.

Oh another one, my old boss always makes fun of people getting their CPA. LIke I said, I could go on.

3 out of 4 passed and sitting for FAR on May 31. Will lose credit for Audit if I don't pass FAR by Aug 4. I love leases and bonds.

Those people who either put you down or telling you to quit are those who either couldn't hack it themselves or have given up themselves.

Hi, I really appreciate the continued comments. I guess I need to not take “negative” comments toward CPA seriously, it's just hard not to if they come from people in my company that I normally respect.

I'm still working on it. Really, in this economy, (well I work in oil and gas), how could anyone discourage someone from getting a license?

Like one of the comments said, they couldn't hack it themselves. I've heard many people talk about how they “couldn't do it.” So I'm halfway there and will hopefully manage somehow without support (in person, only online haha.)

There are many haters. Your true friends and family will support you regardless. My parents and my gf at the time was all the motivation I needed. I do make fun of candidates who haven't decided to take the exam seriously…you know the type, …social life > exam. I know 6 people who gave up recently and one 3/4 there who takes the exam seriously… I root for the 3/4 passed one ^^

You definitely don't need that type of negativity in your life. You can and will pass if you put 100% into your studying.

haters? a bit of an overreaction, they were worried about you. remember, most people have NO idea what the CPA is, so they only know what YOU tell them. And if the only time you talk about is when you can't hang out, got sick, or hate going over a topic, your lack of sleep etc obviously they think it's not that great if you never talk about the benefits. So many people here are guilty of that and get confused when their friends aren't more supportive.

I have a rule, i try to never complain about studying. If i can't go out i may so i haven't studied, or i just make up some other excuse b/c trust me, people looooooooove trying to talk you out of studying. And everyones reaction to you doing it is ‘oh wow, that's sounds fun (sarcasm)', so my solution to stop people from dampering my mood is to stop complaining about studying or don't talk about it. It's never a good topic, leads to no further discussion, so it's an irrelevant thing to bring up anyway, imo.

I think excuses are like a$$holes. Everyone has one. I failed the tests 14 times, and worked at Deloitte. I managed to get through work and my cpa exams a few months after senior promotions. If you want it bad enough, work at it and get it. Tell your friends to stop making excuses and do it!

    BEC: 73,78 79
    AUD: 60, 60, 70, 80
    FAR: 49, 64, 71, 82
    REG: 68, 68, 73, 78

    DONE.... OMGFG DONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well 2 ethics tests to take.

My boss said it to me after I'd failed the 3rd exam (REG/REG/AUD). Nobody in my company is a CPA and most don't have an education to begin with so they can't fathom why the person with 2 bachelors' degrees “isn't smart enough to pass.” I remember the conversation pretty distinctly, because I was so enraged that anyone without a single ounce of experience in higher education, studying past high school, or accounting in general (aside from what he was taught on-the-job by more people without a formal education) would have the audacity to tell me that maybe I should just let it go and focus on the job I have now. Ummm…yeah, the one I'm overqualified/underpaid for to begin with? Sure. I'll get right on that.

My then-boyfriend (now fiance) shut it down really fast. People don't realize this is the hardest professional certification exam in the country. It has lower pass rates than the BAR or medical boards, and typically longer testing hours. Several law students and current doctors/dentists have agreed with me that it is harder (although maybe not more “intense”, since the medical boards come with a practical, face-to-face Q&A session), but most others think that it couldn't possibly be harder since those people theoretically have more responsibility.

Shake it off. Let it go. Just breathe. Use whatever mantra helps and don't let them get under your skin. You've passed 2 of the exams so you're obviously doing something right; letting these comments fester will just bring you down further if you're already disappointed in yourself.

    Exam:I'm done 🙂 🙂 🙂
    REG - 71 (2/22/14); 67 (4/3/14); 74 (8/29/15); 83 (2/29/16)!!!
    BEC - 72 (5/24/14); 85 (1/3/15)!!!!
    AUD - 72 (8/23/14); 76 (10/15/14)!!!
    FAR - 77 (5/26/15)!!!

Started in 2013 using Kaplan and failed REG, REG, BEC, AUD. Switched to NINJA suite in Sept 2014 and passed AUD...then BEC...then FAR!
REG took 2 tries but I finally got it in too!
I'm a hard convert - Using NINJA method with NINJA video/book/notes/MCQ

    Education: Check
    Experience: 3 months left! I hit 4 years on May 30 🙂

@ JS867_5309 – is the CPA really harder than the BAR or even doctors/dentist board exams that they take to become an MD? I had no idea. But would love to hear your thoughts on this!
