McGladrey or Deloitte

Anyone out there work for McGladrey? I just received an “firm offer” from McGladrey and a “soft offer” from Deloitte. Deloitte reached out to me and said I was going to get an offer, but they need to get approval from corporate headquarters since they had to create the opening, and once they get approval they will extend a firm offer. Anyone out there ever work for both? If you work or have worked at either of these places what do you like/dislike? I like the people at both places and think working for both would be great. I am just having a tough time deciding between the two.

Any input would be appreciated, thanks!

I've never worked for either, but if all important things are equal (salary, benefits, commute, likability of employees), then I would probably go Deloitte just because the name has more clout.

I haven't worked for either, but when in doubt, I would probably go for the Big 4, so I'd choose Deloitte (assuming that their “soft” offer is legitimate and will not be rescinded). I have heard that even the “Plus Four More” firms (GT, McGladrey, BDO, and ???) have crazy workloads, so I'd probably go with the larger firm, all things being equal.

What state are the firms located? You have probably already heard this but choose where you feel you would fit the best. You will spend a lot of time with these people and it will go a lot better if you have more in common with them.

The tough part is that I know people in both firms and I am an employee referral on both companies. One company is bringing me on as a Senior the other as an experienced hire. But in 6 months I will be bumped to a Senior at the other. I am leaning toward the experienced hire and not senior because I have been out of the game for 2 years and I would almost prefer the 6 month adjustment before I am managing new hires, even though I think I could do it since I was a senior at my last firm. I would prefer not to say where I have the offers because I don't want it to get back to that location on my feelings. Internet is open and anyone can see and pass things on.

I would not turn down the Mcgladery offer until you hear from Deloitte. I had a soft offer from Deloitte 2 years ago and then then they did not approve the team to hire on a new staff so I ended up with no job. Luckily for me I had not given notice to my job at the time so I was safe.

Thanks Rugger for that little nugget of info. The people on the inside are pretty much telling me it is guaranteed, but I am not counting my chickens until the eggs hatch. I am glad you gave me that info. If I have not heard back from Deloitte by the time the offer expires then I will act as if it was a no.

Can someone define the difference between the two? I've never heard of “soft offer” before.

“We think it could be possible to give you a position in….”?
