    Is MS Access an outdated Technology?

    Does anyone here use Access for their work?

    Has anyone audited a company that uses Access?

    None of the above, but I had an extensive project in Access for my accounting information systems class. Some of the formulas we used helped me with excel. Also, some of the queries helped me to understand the logic in the database my firm uses.

    I used it but I didn't really understand it too well.

    It's a database and query tool that you can customize. I didn't build it in my job but we used it to input data and output data related to treasury stocks. It would run calculations and determine treasury stock pricing. It wasn't something that couldn't be done on excel though.

    I used it when I was auditing. Before the newer version of Office came out, the ~66k row limit in Excel made it impossible to get certain populations in Excel. We had to obtain the detail in Access then copy and paste to Excel.

    We were still getting the detail in Access after Excel allowed for more rows, but otherwise we didn't use it.

    I think I'm one of the few people at my company who has it (and that's only because I was working with our external auditors on a project and they were using it). If I need to do anything with queries, I use ACL not Access.

    Most databases are actually Access databases regardless of the name of the software. A few weeks ago, I was working on a client, going back and forth from their reservation system to Quickbooks. I finally figured out that their database was a .mdb file, so I back it up and opened it in Access. I got all of the transactions I needed and then some because they started it in 2002! I copied the transactions from Access to Excel, fine tuned a few things, used my handy transaction copier and uploaded them all to Quickbooks. I managed to post an entire year's entries in a matter of an hour or two. So to answer your question, Access is not outdated. Knowing the basics may save you some time later on down the road, like filtering and sorting data. I could see how it could come in very handy on audits.
