Misrepresentation: Mom vs CPA

So, my mom loves to talk about my accomplishments, and that does not bother me. However, I have have met many people that say “So you are the CPA.” Ofcourse, my first reaction is “No, I am not a CPA, but am currently taking the exam to become a CPA.” Yesterday was the final straw. I have told my mom multiple times that she cannot tell people that I am a CPA in the loving way all children should.

With that said, I had to be outright rude to my own mother after my Great Grandmother’s funeral yesterday. Stupid questions/statements:

What’s the big deal?, Does it really matter?, and “It’s not like they are going to tell anybody.”

I had to explain to her what would happen if someone decided that I was misrepresenting myself. Has anyone else ever had this problem? Was I right in getting angry?

    CPA EXAM: DONE!!!!
    Ethics Course: Passed
    Application Mailed: 3/16/15
    Professional Conduct Exam: 97
    Certification Date: 4/2/15!!!

No. Chill out, who really cares.

Telling her that your not really a CPA yet is all you can do, you shouldn't have thrown a fit about it. Haha this is funny though.

I've had my office manager call me “one of the CPA's” to a client because it was easier than saying “that girl that doesn't really fit in a category”. I understand your frustrations as long as you correct people, saying “well almost” or “working towards it” I think you are fine. Most people don't even understand what a CPA is in the first place. Now will your mom come across someone who may know? I doubt they will turn you in. Just keep correcting people…

I did see a post where the state of Texas contacted a candidate because their Linked in profile was misleading… I don't equate your situation with that…

    my 2 cents!

I'm pretty sure that nobody can say you are misrepresenting yourself just because you've got an overzealous mom.

I'd be a bit frustrated that after explaining it multiple times my mom ignored my request to not say that but I wouldn't be angry.

Not sure if you're a parent yet, but I can tell you that we lose all ability to reason when it comes to our kids!

    FAR- 77
    AUD -49, 71, 84
    REG -56,75!
    BEC -75

Massachusetts CPA (non reporting) since 3/12.

    My answer is, “meh”

Yes, it might be annoying, but your mom telling her friends something misleading is a far cry from you putting it on your resume. So in all reality, its probably not worth getting frustrated with your mother about it

Doubt you'll get a letter from your state board warning you about your mother holding you out as a CPA to her friends LOL

I think what really bothers me is telling people that I'm not a CPA after they were told I was. Almost like walking on glass barefoot. I guess that I should also clarify my description of angry. Angry = a firm talking to, no yelling, no f-bombs.

Was not too worried about getting a letter from the state board.

My mom is similar………. I'm not sure she's actually called me a CPA YET, she just doesn't totally comprehend being a working professional!

For example, her linked in picture was previously a picture of her and me while I was wearing a bad 80s-perm wig. I had to explain to her that linkedin =/= facebook! So then she changed it…….. to a picture of me and her at my wedding!! Then she like, endorsed me for something silly like swimming. MOM!!!!

    REG - 65, 70, 80!
    BEC - 35, 62, 79!
    AUD - 73, 75!
    FAR - 65, 73, 70, 75! DONE.

Don't worry about it, you are not responsible for what your mom says. I understand it's annoying when you've corrected her but IMO not worth getting angry about. She's not only proud of you but predicting the future. 🙂
