Peter Olinto promised a lot of money for this CPA gig. I’m just not seeing it.

    I’ve been lied to.

I would say I'm doing alright. Age 27 and my salary after bonus puts me in the top 2% on an average year and top 1% in a good year.

He was speaking from the standpoint of slanging review courses for $3K a pop to a target audience of people who don't have to pay for them! In which case, the dollars will flow!

There are a plethora of underpaid/overworked cpa jobs out there. The cpa alone can only get you so far… But you will make more than a comparable person who doesn't have the designation. The hard work can't end with the last passing cpa score.

I fell the same, but not in a joking manner. We are just subsidizing the B4 people like a bunch of suckers. Wish I had just bought Ninja. Feel like I got taken, big time. If I ever run into Olinto after I pass, I'm making him buy me the largest most expensive coffee I can find. (And I don't even drink coffee)

Can you explain why you feel taking advantage of by Becker. If you study Becker you will pass the exam. There is no review course that will automatically pass you the exam… If you put in the work to will pass!!

My anecdotal evidence is that Becker is the best…I ised yaegar for BEC and aud and then Becker for far and reg and thought Becker was much better

I think the reason they feel taken advantage of is cause a lot of people don't realize that the cheap courses (like NINJA, Roger, Wiley, etc.) can give them as good of a chance at passing as the $3k Becker…and once they realize that, they feel ripped off. I would, too, if I'd bought Becker.

As for the money, like others have said, being a CPA makes you able to make money, but doesn't give it to you automatically. I got no raise or bonus out of passing since I was in private, but then I got a job which I may not have gotten without it, which paid about 50% more than the job I had when I got licensed…so, it's paid off for me. However, getting this job took hard work as well (in having the skills needed, etc.), and keeping it will require continued hard work.

    @DoOver

Olinto did say to take him up on the coffee offer if we are ever in New York.

In all seriousness, I think Becker did do a good job in preparing me for the exam. It helped me pass all 4 sections. Even if it cost me a bloody fortune…

Rocky, the tallest oak didn't become the tallest overnight ; ) Give it some time…

I've got nothing but praise for Becker. Heck, if I ran into Olinto, I'd by him a coffee…maybe a doughnut too.

I never got the whole course thing. We paid tens of thousands of dollars for college courses. I didn't see anything on the exam that I didn't see in college.

I spent a total of about $100 on review materials. The four books, a detailed study plan, and personal accountability are all one needs to pass the exams.

Thanks Marti1nd. It was out of necessity- my firm doesn't reimburse me for expenses.

I purchased one Wiley paperback in 2011. The other three books I purchased were all Kindle versions of the Wiley books. Somehow, I got those for $10 each.

After that, I drafted a calendar with realistic milestones. I passed every exam that I adhered to the master plan. The couple I failed were because I fell off track.

At a real high level- I just made sure that I was getting 70% or more on each section of the Wiley MCQs before I took the exam.

I spent very little on prep material too. I blogged for Another71 to get free Ninja materials, paid for 2 test banks and 1 Wiley book. I borrowed materials from others for my first couple of tests. I used Kaplan, Wiley, Ninja, and Becker materials. Whatever I could find so I didn't go broke on these exams. I was fortunate to be surrounded by auditors that had just passed the exams. 🙂
