Hello guys, I work in Internal Audit in South Florida – around 2.5 years of experience and a CPA. The company I work for wants me to move to Seattle… they did mention that there would be something like a 6k living adjustment…

I have been looking at rent over there at Zillow.com… In order for me to get something similar to what I have here, I’ll probably be paying at least 850 more a month – Thats considering a 20 minute commute and a place that has some space for my family.. I currently pay 1150 and would pay around 2k in seattle.

The difference for rent is around 12k considering medicare, social security and federal taxes that would be sucked out of my paycheck before rent is paid… Also the other differences in cost of living for seattle – i’m sure everything is more expensive there! groceries, gas, autoshops “Since my old cars seem to have a long term relationship with the mechanics!”

I did a lot of research, and most of the websites show that the payscale difference is around 6 to 8 thousand.

I have a meeting to talk about the move and I want to mention the financial aspect too,

What do you think? Any tips?

Anyone with similar background can give me an idea of salaries in Seattle ? I also dont want to go there and feel that I am underpaid compared to other companies there …

Thanks so much for your help!

I'm in Spokane, the other side of the state. Several friends, family, and class mates are over in the Seattle area. It is really fricken expensive.

2 and 3 bedroom apartments can easily push toward $2,000/month. IF you are willing to live out of town and commute roughly an hour you can get back to reasonable levels. Another issue in Seattle is TRAFFIC, I've white knuckled LA before, but Seattle is a close 2nd. The issue is that they don't have enough land, and they are stuck with 4 lane high ways (each way) for over a million people, getting ANYWHERE, even as little as 6 miles can take 45 minutes…this happens regularly.

Other than those minor issues, Seattle is pretty cool…but I would never voluntarily live there unless the job was very far away from the greater Seattle area.

Hello TomqO4, yes, driving is not one of my hobbies! I live in South Florida, I feel like i'm doing injustice to my family by even considering leaving, the beach is 20 minutes away, the weather is nice all year long… I think its affordable to live here, I am not saving or anything – at all … but i'm

But there are probably better advancement opportunities in Seattle,

I highly appreciate your input 🙂 Thanks,

Whatever you do up there, make sure you give the ball to Marshawn Lynch.

I'm in Spokane too and I'll echo what tom said…Seattle is very expensive. I had a coworker transfer to our Seattle office and she got a slight increase to cover cost of living and it didn't cover the cost of her apartment alone by even a long shot. I love Seattle but there is no way I would even consider moving there because of the outrageously high cost of living.

Also, South Florida to Seattle would be one huge culture shock! That's about as different weather wise and culture wise as I think you could get!

    Yeah, Seattle is expensive.

Given your experience, I would say mid fifties to high sixties would be the norm. Really varies though.

One good thing about Seattle though is it's job market is excellent. There are a ton of good companies here so if you move here for your current company, you can always shop around a couple months down the road to see what other companies will offer for a comparable position.
