Moving to DMV Area

Hi, I recently graduated with my MSA and have accepted a job with a big four in DC in the fed govt audit department to start in January. This will be my first move away from home in Louisiana but I really wanted something different, new, and more opportunities. I’ve been doing some research for good areas and am leaning more towards Arlington, VA. I am also looking for an area that’s pretty safe, reasonable in price, close to a metro, walking distance to restaurants and shopping, and great for a young female professional. If you have any advice on areas or moving in general, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

My cousin rented a place on Army Navy Drive in Arlington, VA across from California Pizza Kitchen, right next to a shopping center & transportation. Very nice area. I imagine pretty expensive too. Congratulations and good luck!

@skynet: lol sorry for the misleading thread title. I'll try to change it.

@cmertes: thanks a lot. I'm looking up apartments on the street now.

Lived in that area for nine years and lived in Alexandria, Arlington, Woodbridge, and Ashburn. From what you described I would go with Arlington, and specifically I'd recommend “Avalon at Arlington.” It's affordable, a good area (Arlington can be spotty), can metro/taxi to DC and taxi to all the night life, close to a Gold's Gym, etc.

If you need further recommendations let me know.

@lion_of_the_rock Thank you so much! I'm adding that one to my list to tour when I visit in October. I see that there's not a metro walking distance to that apartment. Would you usually take a taxi/bus to the metro? Do you know anything about Crystal Towers, Crystal House, or Crystal Square Apartments? Thank you so much for your help.

I am living in DMV (15 years alreday). Great place to live.

I used to lived Crystal House when I was single and it is a great area, a lot of restaurant, shopping, and still growning, 2 metro lines Blue and Yellow, close to DC and many young people in the Area. It is still Arlington.

You will need metro access during the week days. Drive in DC is not fun. The best part of DMV, you will find people and food from everywhere.

    Good luck

I moved to a DMV area one. Still had to take a number and wait in a long line just to get my driver's license renewed.

I don't have any firsthand experience with the apartment options in Crystal City. I know Crystal City has a lot of options for eating, and you have metro access. My recommendation for Avalon was just that it was a more affordable option for me at the time and the area surrounding it was clean and safe i.e. lots of joggers and young people out and about. Def not metro accessible as far as walking, but can quickly drive to one and street park for sure.

If you like Arlington maybe look for something around Courthouse?

The Reserve at Eisenhower is on the West Side of Alexandria if you want to look a bit further out. It would put you walking distance from metro and one stop from Old Town Alexandria which is my favorite part of Northern VA. Old Town has a lot of charm and shopping. The one con is that Arlington has more of a younger crowd. But, the metro can put you in Arlington, etc. so really not a problem.

Check out DuPont Circle in DC, def a spot for the youngsters and a more hip, young professional crowd i.e. you can network and find a boyfriend (or whatever you prefer) there. As far as living there probably out of price range.

Ahh brings back memories. Crystal City is nice but can feel suburby. I would second Arlington near the Courthouse. I used to live at Potomac Towers near the orange line. Great apartments with 24 hour front desk access. $1500 all inclusive for one bedroom. However, there is a 10 minute walk to the orange line, which I didn't mind. If you can afford closer to $2000, I would look closer to the orange line.

Arlington is good for 20s and 30s age groups, so don't have to be super young. It's definitely less diverse than DC though, if you are looking for that wooden ship…
