Moving to Japan mid-CPA… Am I crazy?

Okay, so I passed FAR in February which I’m still shocked that I made it through that exam. After that, I took one scheduled month off for my company’s fiscal year end. I hated to take a month off but it was a requirement to get caught up at work for fiscal year end closing.

So here I am, start of April and getting my momentum back in full swing for AUD in May… and then it happens. I get pulled into my boss’s office with an incredible career opportunity that is literally impossible to pass up. This is something that will not come around again in my lifetime probably. Unfortunately, the opportunity requires a relocation to Japan for 2-6 months starting May 7th (so my May 22nd AUD exam is shot).

I called up the board of examiners and I can actually sit for my exam in Tokyo at a Prometrics location. The downside is that I think passing the CPA exam is difficult enough already. Throwing in a relocation to Japan in the middle of it and taking on an enormous career challenge that will most certainly take up more time than my current role in the states… Do I stand a chance??? Probably not, but I’m going to take a crack at it. I’ll need A71 to support me as I sacrafice my sanity, that’s for sure.

At least my boss does support the CPA and I have been told that I’m not expected to work more than 10 hour days. That’s easier said than done when learning a new role, but we will see how this all goes I guess.

Jeff… any discounts on NINJA if I’m going to the land of the NINJA’s? 🙂

This sounds like an incredible opportunity! Just stay disciplined with your study schedule and you can do this. Good Luck!

In retrospect, we regret the things we didn’t do more than the things we did

@wantthisover … Well put. That's how I'm approaching the situation. No regrets and rolling the dice. Rescheduling AUD for last week in May… Just in Tokyo instead of Illinois. No big deal, just about 6,500 miles away from my original testing center 😛

Yeah dude, you definitely cannot pass up this opportunity. WORST case scenario, you can resume studies when you get back in 6 months, but I'm sure you'll bang it out when you're in Japan. Good luck man!!!

I'd consider it a plus study wise, less distractions than your regular environment.

    FAR- 77
    AUD -49, 71, 84
    REG -56,75!
    BEC -75

Massachusetts CPA (non reporting) since 3/12.

Sounds like such a great opportunity. Going off your FAR score, I can tell you'll no problems passing the other 3 sections! So, can I be nosy and ask that you explain a little more about what you'll be doing in Japan!? 🙂

    Thanks everyone for the encouragement.

@ mla… I'm trying to convince myself it will be less distractions but I know the reality of my job and I'll probably end up having to keep on eye on my current role as well as dealing with the learning curve of my new role. However, my management promised they would not expect me to work more than 10 hours a day or on weekends because I am working in my 18 month CPA window. I hope that promise doesn't become unrealistic.

@jenuno… I probably should be a little careful with the details just because I work for a large company (private sector) and my username basically gives away my real name if anyone were on here from where I work. It's not an announced position and it's kind of under the radar that I'm being asked to support the role, so I could just see my boss calling me into his office with a printout from A71 asking me why the heck I'm posting about it online 🙂 . I'm a financial analyst for a global company. There is temporary vacancy for a position in Japan where they are looking to hire a local person but need someone to essentially manage all accounting operations (treasury, some tax reporting, account recs, reporting, etc.) until the role is filled.

Easiest way to put it is that I'm currently just a little guy at the bottom of the corporate ladder about 3 years into my career and it's an opportunity to jump into a role temporarily that will give me exposure to some very high level activities. On top of that, I'll be interacting with some major global players in management that would never know my name had this opportunity not arisen. One of those things that will get my name out there to some incredibly high up people.

    Actually I am from Tokyo.

    I visited Japan last summer.

I used to work at ESL school (English as a second language school) so I have seen how non-Japanese teachers had fun time and difficult time.

    Think of it this way.

You'll have PLENTY of time to study on the plane to Japan.

@bob lol ya I was thinking I'll have no complaints with the flight time because it's solid study hours. If all goes to plan, I'll fly out there studying AUD and fly home studying REG. CPA train doesn't stop for international trips this is a full time commitment!

Applied for the international NTS today through NASBA and I'll be sitting for AUD on May 25th. I printed driving directions from my soon to be office to the Prometric center… It's all written in symbols lol. Hope the cab driver can read it because I sure as heck can't.
