Background – If anyone is feeling discouraged, frustrated, doubtful and wish to give up on the CPA, feel free to take a look at my story below. If I can finish this exam, anybody can!
Summer 2012 – I will never forget how I felt deep down inside as I excitedly opened my CPA review material package for the very first time. As I flipped through the review books. I was boiling with excitement to dive right in and pass all 4 parts on my first try. Little did I know back then how long I would have to endure through this journey.
November 2012 – My very first exam – FAR. As I checked my score, my heart sank. 71. Wow, I thought I had studied enough to pass, but obviously it wasn’t.
January 2013 – Instead of restudying for FAR, I made the mistake of moving on to AUD. I thought to myself that I could easily pass AUD and gain a confidence boost after my first fail. 71. Really? Same exact score as FAR??
November 2013 – After taking a long break from studying (busy with work but mainly I did not even want to think about CPA at all), I decided to retake AUD. Can’t be that bad second time around, right? 72. I only increased one point?? Maybe, I am not fit to be a CPA.
October 2014 – After almost a year, I decided to finish what I had started. The dreaded beast – FAR. 78. Yes! I can do this!
January 2015 – AUD 78. Haha, after my 3rd attempt, I have finally passed. Two down, two left to go!
February 2015 – BEC 75. I will take it!
May 2015 – After having passed 3 parts, I thought I was so close! Finally! Let’s finish this REG!! I will never forget how I had almost wanted to smash my phone to the ground as I saw my score – 48 (my lowest score ever). How did this happen?! Because I grew complacent and started to slack off on my final part. BIG MISTAKE!!!
Aug 2015 – REG retake time. I got this! 60. Well, at least I improved by 12 points. Better luck next time. Besides, I still got time.
Nov 2015 – 3rd REG attempt – 67. How did I only improve by only 7 points?? By this point, I was so sick and tired of the CPA that I wanted to throw my review book out the window.
Feb 2016 – 4th and final REG attempt – 76! YES!!! FINALLY!! To be honest, I still feel everything is so surreal how I had finally managed to finish after 4 long years…
Honestly, I have learned a lot over the past four years about myself in general while pursuing this CPA designation. I have a very average skill set, but my persistence kept me going. I guess you could say that I just do not know how to give up. If I can pass the CPA and it took me 4 years, everyone else can. Thank you Jeff and I wish everyone the best of luck!!!
