I work for PwC and it is my first week working for them. I work from 8 am till 6 pm Monday to Friday.it takes about an 45 mins to drive from home to work and the same time going back home, so in total around 12 hours are out of my control. I talked to my boss about releasing me early like around 3 or 4 pm so I could have enough time to study, but he refused, so I asked him if I can study, but he also refused because I will have so much work and I won’t be able to study.

PLEASE EVERYONE, I need you advise, I am going to have my FAR exam in May and I am wondering if I should leave PwC and just get all my free time for studying, or I should keep working and give a try if I can handle both CPA and work.

This thread is pretty funny…You people are killing this person…but it's deserving. I'm wondering if hilli is the typical office employee you'd like to reach over and smack due to ignorance <

    My 2 cents,

Get jeff study schedule, early, lunch, late for FAR and try to stick to the schedule and keep the job. I wish i had a job i am always broke with all these fees and materials to buy.

Long story short … contact jeff and get the study schedule from him. I am sitting for FAR in may too and i have 4years old twin boys who never get tired and never sleeps and i am a single mom.

Wish you all the best on your studies.

I wouldn't worry about it if you asked respectfully. Them that don't ask, don't get. It's work-related; not like you were asking to leave early to play beach volleyball every day! Some bosses are OK with it, some aren't.

It doesn't mean you can't study during lunch, or come in early or leave late, as others have suggested. If you're careful, you might be able to discreetly review flash cards or handouts when you have downtime during the work day (Even the most intense jobs have downtime.) Although please don't jeopardize your job.

You might also ask your boss, if they took the CPA, about their experience and if they have any advice for you. People loooove to give advice, and this will have the psychological effect of moving the boss onto your side.

Don't give up PwC to find time to study!! That's all I have to say….I think everyone else said everything else that needed to be said…although it was a little brutal. :-/ But then again, this process is brutal so it's all part of the experience…work is brutal too. Life is brutal!

I almost pulled that one off though…I almost quit my job to find time to study. I'm glad I didn't because I wouldn't have the money to pay for this expensive journey! Seriously…it's expensive!!!

    Hili783 – I understand your situation, and I'm studying full-time because I don't think I could handle working full-time and studying.

HOWEVER, PwC is a great company to have on your resume. Try what the others here have suggested regarding studying and taking your exam. If you can't pass that way, just get one or two years experience at PwC, then consider getting a job that will give you more flexibility to study and pass.

For now, stay where you are. It will be great experience even if you don't have your CPA yet. Just do what you can. You might surprise yourself and pass. But, schedule your exams far enough apart to give yourself a fighting chance.

    Good luck.

btw most of the recommended study schedules are to get the exam done within 4-6 weeks. I found that studying 20 hours a week impossible so instead i stretched my study periods out to about 8-9 weeks and studied less each day. of course i also take a train 50 minutes to and from work each day which is a built in 100 min study session.

    @Hili783

Additional tips.. Make a study schedule and stick to it, close down facebook; dont watch tv; dont go out (unless it's a reward), inform all your friends&family that you are studying for your cpa exam, so you will be unavailable to chitchat and ask them for emotional support; go to the gym; and use every free minute you have to study.

I wake up early, study one hour, then go to work (9-6); study during my commute (1 hr each way), one hour during lunch, and review in the evening (if im still able to think.. which most days i am not). I dont guarantee a passing score with this study schedule, I simply am pointing out that it is possible to successfully study for cpa while having a demanding work/life. Good luck…

@hili783.. I think you just need to make this studying a temporary part of your life and squeez it in.. everyone on this forum is in the same situation if not way worse.. I myself dont have any kids and am not married.. but i wake up every morning at 5:30 and dont get home until 7 pm every single day..

I have a lot of respect for those who are doing this while married and with kids.. I have absolutely no idea how you do it but keep doing what you do!

I just hard time at work and I thought I should write something here so I might feel better, but now I will work hard and hopefully I will get my CPA.

“I have a lot of respect for those who are doing this while married and with kids.. I have absolutely no idea how you do it but keep doing what you do!”

I don’t necessarily have any more respect for people just because they are married/with kids and are able to study. Truthfully, I get sick of my self-righteous male friends who say “I managed to do such-and-such while married with kids” when turns out their wife does a majority of the housework and child-rearing. No matter what, marriage or any relationship creates structure. I have a gf, and she is nice enough to bring me food and help out while I study. So I’d argue being single is actually the toughest when it comes to stuff like this.

To the OP…in most situations, I’d find another job. Most aren’t worth it if you have a boss like that. My boss is very lenient about my studying, but I had to leave another job where my boss wanted me to pass the CPA, but also wanted me to work 12 hours a day, 6 days a week. Screw that ****, it wasn’t a known firm and they were cheap. So to greener pastures I went.

However having PWC on your resume will be very beneficial. I say tough it out over the next year or so, and you’ll be very happy that you did.
