Hi everyone. Just started by BEC journey today. Heard a lot of conflicting things about this topic. Very scared. Anyone have any advice? (oops I probably did not put this on BEC forum, sorry!)
Don't underestimate BEC...but don't let it scare you off. Most people agree that it is not the hardest. You've already passed REG and AUD so you're halfway done!
What review material are you using?
Oh, definitely not underestimating it! I'm scared ****less of these exams. Halfway done still seems a long way to go. But it definitely is much more motivating and encouraging to be halfway done. I'm currently starting out with Becker, and have plans to purchase the Wiley online testbank. But I notice it has the least amount of questions for BEC. I'm open to to other testbanks and such.
I only wrote not to underestimate it because I've come across posts where people have said that it is easy - and it's not.
I would think questions from Becker and Wiley online test bank should be sufficient (between the two of them there seem to be many questions), but I don't know if I passed yet so my opinion may not be worth much...
@misanthrope87, I also noticed that the Wiley testbank has only 600 MCQs for BEC. I think for AUD, Wiley had double that. I wonder why that is. I haven't taken a stab at the Wiley questions yet, maybe those 600 MCQs are really good!
I used Becker for BEC, supplemented with Wiley, but then got a free trial with Gleim. At the time I felt that Gleim did have a lot of questions on Corporate Governance. Plus their testbank seemed hardest, which helped me understand the concepts better.
Crazy lady that I am, this one was by far, my favorite to study for. I love all the econ stuff!
Good luck!
misanthrope,
Definitely check out Roger's youtube video on overhead variances. I used Becker for all 4 parts except this portion of BEC, based on so many people saying Becker was confusing in this area. I think his SEVEN diagram was phenomenal - just plug in the numbers and voila! there's your answer!
@yankeeaccountant, how do you get the free trial of Gleim? I've tried going to their website to find it.. Maybe I am blind, or maybe this process has killed all of my other brain cells..
@Peanut - I've never used it, but a quick google search brought me here:
http://www.gleim.com/accounting/demos/
Maybe thats it?
Thanks Mini, I'll check it out. I tried to just search around their website a few months back but was unsuccessful! Mini, what did you think of BEC? Give me some words of wisdom! I've finished going through every MCQ twice already
@Peanut - Well, I dont know if this helps or hurts but I thought BEC was the easiest of the four exams. I thought the economics and IT sections were just a bunch of memorization and common sense. My strategy going in to BEC was to be very strong in my strong areas and just try to squeak by in my weaker areas. I am not strong at all with the cost accounting concepts, the variance analyses, the overhead calculations, etc., etc. I tried to do as many Becker and Wiley questions as I could, but I just hated those topics so much. I know I was strong in the other areas, and I would assume that got me over the edge. I was somehow comparable in the writing section, when I thought for sure that I would be stronger. I'm still not sure what happened there.
Have you been able to identify your strengths and weaknesses yet? You still have a few weeks, so I would keep pounding the multiple choice questions. Just hang in there and do not be intimidated. Even if the test isnt going great, just keep your composure and grind out as many points as you can. It could be the different between a 74 and a 75.
@Mini, I don't think BEC is that difficult. Nothing compared to REG or FAR (although FAR doesn't have overly difficult concepts). Just took my first progress test and got a 90 lol so I don't think I have many weaknesses! Maybe I should switch to Wiley soon...
I took it ages ago, but memorizing (cold) those 6 equations (or whatever) for cost accounting - variances, overhead, etc - really helped out. It's a messy section of economics, accounting, money & banking, etc.
@misanthrope87: Judging by your other scores, BEC should work fine for you. Of course you'll have to study hard, but you definitely have what it takes. Go through the materials and make sure you know your strong topics like the back (and front) of your hand. Do your best on topics you aren't too comfortable with. You can never know everything, unless you have forever to study, but you should study enough to be comfortable with most topics. If you do that, you'll be perfectly fine. I struggled with the cost concepts but kept working problems so that I could at least get some right. Good luck!
Also, those long, loooooong questions from B3 and B5 - don't freak out because nothing on the exam requires all those steps. But do go through them because their broken down steps do help on the exam. This won't make sense to you now since you're just starting BEC but you'll understand what I mean when you get there.
Aw thank you everyone for such helpful suggestions! I'm going to bookmark this for sure. Damn, I hate memorizing..
@See Pee A
REG was a complete fluke. I don't think I could ever pass REG again if I lost it.
@Acct
I saw in another topic that you passed BEC. Congrats! Was that your last exam?
@Yankee
Do you think the Gleim ones are good practice though? Or are they just too much compared to the real thing?
@misanthrope87
Thank you, and yes :)
I took my BEC in noevember 2011 and failed with 62.I am currently using Gleim as that is the cheapest and not in the position to buy NINja. Does any one have BEC ninja who can lend me the book,will be a great help. I am struggling with costing and simulations, so would like to have few advice on that.
One thing I have done on the 3 other parts is to do all of the homework questions with a notebook and write out all of the answers. It really helps the stuff sink in for me.
@break0ut
I tried writing things out before, like notes. But it just takes way too much time and makes my hand hurt. I wrote in the other post that I cant even study 20 hours in a week. >< But I don't doubt that it is quite helpful.
All I can do is nod and laugh... I had to switch to "Dr. Grip" pencils and pens because of the wrist pain. I plan to study 20 hrs. a week but I just go through the chapter, make my notes, and do the h.w. in as much time as it takes.
@misanthrope87
I personally thought they were hard, but for me, I needed that. It really helped solidify the concepts. The mcq's seemed tougher than the actual exam. Good luck with BEC!!
@Peanut,
Sorry I missed ur post, I hope you found it. I am reposting the link here just in case:http://www.gleim.com/accounting/cpa/online/demos.php?x=63&y=21
Sounds like your studying is going well!! Halfway there-woohoo!!!! Good luck.
How's everyone holding up? I have been severely slacking because of the holidays...full speed ahead starting Monday.
@break0ut.. Terrible. I hate BEC >:0 Or I hate my brain that memorizes everything!
@breakout
Terrible for the last 2 days! On friday I worked till 9:30pm and on Sat for NYE i worked till 5:30pm because of audit deadlines...Didn't get any studying done because I was too tired. But I hope to go on schedule starting from today.
@Peanut
I HATE bec too....>< But try to stay calm. Good luck on your test and tell us how it went!
I don't presume to know what everyone feels is the hardest exam, but I guess I also thought BEC was the easiest exam to study for, take, pass, etc. For the people who feel it's a difficult section, what specific areas did you struggle with? I'm just curious...for me, REG was the bane of my existence...I actually throw up a little thinking about it.
@BaseballCPA
I think it's because the questions for BEC aren't straight forward in relation to what's in the study materials. It's kind of implied and you have to apply the knowledge base from studying to different kinds of questions that may not have been explicitly covered in the review course. The topics are kind of random. At least with, REG you know what you're being tested on. But I'm truly thankful to get REG over with. It definitely is ugly.
Ahem...full speed ahead starting today since I didn't do @(*$ on Monday or Tuesday!
I have about a week or two to go studying for BEC. I initially thought it would be a breeze, as I remember a lot of the basic concepts from college, but since then it has been a little rockier than I anticipated. There are way too many computational questions that I consider silly in both becker in wiley.
of course, its up to me to learn the material enough so that i dont consider anything silly. but until then, ill consider it silly.
unlike the other 3 parts, I have a bit of a time crunch to take this test since busy season really starts rolling, so as much as i would like more time to really learn this crap, i cant afford to put off taking the test.
