Name Change?

I just started studying for the CPA exam and plan to take two parts before my wedding in May. I am just wondering if anyone else was in a similar situation?? I would like to change my name as soon as possible but I’ve heard it’s very difficult to do and have been told to wait until I receive my CPA license (which, at best, would be 8 months after our wedding).

Anyone else have to go through this? Advice is greatly appreciated! Thanks!

    Congrats on your wedding!

I just got married in May, and my name change took 5 days, I went to Social Security on a Thursday with my paperwork already filed out, answered some questions (Make sure you have all your documentation drivers license, marriage certificate, birth certificate ect) They told me I would get my new SS card in 7-10 days. It arrived on Tuesday of the following week. I was then able to go to the DMV and get a new license, which in my state you get the same day. I then scanned all of my documentation to my state representative at NASBA, and he had my name changed in the system in 5 days. I was then able to apply for my next NTS.

I am not sure if everyone will have the same experience, but most of my friends said their process was really easy too. Maybe check with your state board to verify what their process is for a name change relating to the exam. I had no issues. It was harder to change my name with some credit cards then anything else.

    A - 61, 91!!
    B - 78!
    F - 76!!!
    R - 71, 73, 74, 69, 77!!!!

    Finally done!

This is my 2nd attempt at the exam, I had two parts passed (failed many) and I stupidly quit, big mistake. Now I'm back and with a vengeance!

Well that's reassuring! I knew the official part with the state wouldn't be a problem but it was the NASBA part that worried!

    Thanks for sharing!

I changed mine too with relative ease…may have even taken less than 5 days in IL Board and NASBA system…2 of those days were over the weekend. I also faxed my documents to AICPA separately and they reissued my ethics certificate in my new name the same day. It's a very simple process! I'd do it before the CPA certificate…in case you have to jump through hoops to get your certificate reissued…but it seems like mid-exam the previous commenter and myself had no trouble. Good Luck!

I had no problem. I can't remember how long it took but it was fairly easy for me as well.

Started sitting in May 2002, on and off. But since 2008 I've been nonstop and my scores are....
    AUD - 39, 48, 56, 65, 68, 73, 76!!! (Finally passed in Oct 2011!!!) Becker, NINJA, & Wiley
    REG - 75 (Lost Credit) 72, 68, 73, 75 (Passed again in Aug 2011) Becker, NINJA, & Wiley
    FAR - 65, 68, 75 (Lost Credit) 68, 73, 73, 80 (Passed again in May 2012) Roger, NINJA, & Wiley
    BEC - 65, 68, 71, 72, 72, 71, 76 (Lost Credit)- 70, 76!!!! I AM DONE!!! - Roger, NINJA, & Wiley
After 10 long years of studying, I AM DONE!!!! Finally a Licensed CPA in the State of New York!!

Wow thank you for this post! I'm getting married in December, and I'll have taken all 4 parts by then (last two on Nov 2nd and 30th). Unfortunately, with moving, wedding planning, and graduating from the masters program this semester my studying has taken a hit on this third exam.

If I end up needing to retake in the first quarter of next year, it's good to know the name change process will be simple.

    REG (8/7/12) 77
    FAR (10/4/12) 70 Retake 5/25/13 84!!!!!!!!!
    AUD (11/2/12) 78
    BEC (11/30/12) 82

one piece of advice, I would submit name change documents during non-testing window…bc if you do it in a testing window you will need NASBA to reissue your NTS in new name if you already have NTS in old name. I did it during not testing window…then applied for NTS, so when the testing window opened in OCT…I could have taken the exam…the reason I havent yet it bc I'm not prepared, but I could have 🙂
