Need advice! Boss either reimburses my fee or I leave….

So I am in quite a pickle and need advice.

I scheduled to retake REG on the 28th. My NTS expires in June (useless month to expire). I’m taking FAR this Sunday which would leave me 21 days to study.

My boss subsequently scheduled me on a first-year out-of-town audit and said I need to change my exam date.

The latest dates available right now are the 20-23rd, which disadvantages me at least three full days of prep time. I feel like I was really pushing it with 21 days and anymore than that I might as well throw out my exam fees.

There are two other staff I would be able to switch with but he is adamant about me going.

He is always on our backs to finish the exam and I feel like I am being disadvantaged for trying to fulfill that goal.

So, my proposal to him is going to be that I be reimbursed for my exam fees + reschedule fees (a little over $200) if we can not change the schedule.

If he refuses to do this, I might go to our partner to have him reason. It’s a pretty small firm with the principal, partner and about 10 other employees. If I still can’t get anything out of it, I’m tempted to leave my job, which is a really scary thought.

I’m just in a huge upheaval right now and don’t know what to do.

I wish I would have known this initially, as I was really stressing to get FAR and REG in this month…ugh.

Any advice for how to approach my boss about this or just….support or suggestions is greatly appreciated.

    I wouldn't say a word today.

I would cool off over the weekend and evaluate.

I would also call up 3 people you trust and get their take.

Don't do something you can't take back.

The 21 days might be a gift…you will be forced to be super-focused.

you might be in a pickle and think what your boss is doing is unfair – you are also obviously standing on principle here, but it would be a big mistake for you to leave your job over this situation. The market is still saturated – there are CPA's right now that are having trouble breaking into the market – if you decide to leave, have another one lined up.

Your approach about the discussion and reimbursement sound appropriate to me, the best thing to do is talk it out, just don't leave your job over this.

    HustlinHustlin,

Cool down first. Then rethink everything you typed out. I agree with the others, don't threaten to leave. It would be really unfortunate to lose your job over this. I know it's a big deal, but I wouldn't risk my job security. Either move it and give it your very best shot. or let it pass and get a new NTS. I would take it because you still have a chance at passing for the $200. I hope it all works out for you!

    Thanks for the advice everyone.

I wouldn't prefer to take REG with 21 days but I have to take it this month and I'd rather go for it instead of letting it expire.

Also, I'm not going to approach leaving the job just yet. Honestly, the $200 is a small cost to them compared to hiring and training a new employee and I would be surprised if they were not willing to reason with me. Again, we aren't a big firm and have actually been struggling to hire staff with experience. I have been waiting to get my CPA to find another job out of public accounting, so thinking about jumping ship to study is scary but maybe worth it.

Again, I'm not right off the bat going to walk out, but I feel like the solutions are there and if they won't work something out with me, I might have to leave to keep my dignity.

Ugh. Now I'm just all torn on what to do.

I just got the NTS for FAR so it doesn't expire for a while. Maybe I drop that now, cancel my appt this Sunday and take it in July and just start Hustlin' on REG to get in more time before having to take it? That way, I might be in a better shape for both.

I'm not looking great for my FAR retake – scoring in the 60's again on Wiley anyway..

    AGHHHH so many conflicts!!!

When were you going to take FAR? Maybe push it back if you think it will help the cram for REG.

And honestly, I don't feel prepared – but who ever does?

The downfall is I would pretty much waste all time time I have spent studying it….
