Hey guys, just looking for some advice or previous experiences anyone could share. I start my new job on January 6th. I originally had my FAR exam scheduled on the 11th as its a Saturday and I would not have to miss work. The thing is I am way behind on studying because FAR is a struggle for me. I was thinking of moving my exam date to the 22nd or 23rd, but by then I will have been assigned to a client and am afraid of what my team will say seeing as I just started. I have a week of training in Chicago then another week of training in Texas. So technically I wont start working with my team until the 20th then my exam will be in the middle of that week. Do you think it is a huge deal if I somehow try to take the day off or request not to be assigned a client until then? There is no way I can take FAR on the 11th as it will just be a fail and a huge waste of money, which I am not too inclined to waste. Just worried I will get in trouble or cause a hassle on my first few days of work.

    AUD - 77
    BEC - 82
    FAR - 75
    REG - 81

    AUD - 69, 77
    REG - 74, 81
    FAR - 75!
    BEC - 71, 82

    IL candidate!

    Finally done (5/24/16)!! Yahooooooo!

I would let HR (or your senior/manager if you know who they are already) know ASAP and I wouldn't think it should be a problem. I'm assuming you are in public accounting? They push for people to sit for the exams like crazy in public, so I'm sure they'll understand that you need time off to take them.

    F- 7/13- 84
    R- 10/13- 79
    A- 11/13- 99
    B- 1/14- 86

This exam ALMOST defeated me back in 2006-2008, but I came back and WON!

I did reach out to HR already, but they take forever especially now that is holiday season. I am just worried if I don't change the date I will miss out on the date I want, but then also afraid if I do pay to change the date it will be a hassle and I will end up losing my money to change it again! I am in public and yes my firm is very gung-ho about the exam, but I am not sure how it will go over for someone who just started working you know? I like to think, like you, that it wont be a big deal either, but some managers are such sticklers around busy season!

I work in public and during my 2nd week I requested a day to take the exam. It was in July so it wasn't really a busy time and they were perfectly fine with it. Every firm may be different. I would suggest maybe asking your co-workers on what their thoughts are.

I tried fining another Saturday or Sunday, but because it is so close to the date all those are taken. I don't want to push the exam out much further as I won't really be able to study when I get rolling with work and then knowing me I would forget a lot of the material! Thanks for the tips. I was thinking of asking a coworker about it as well.

Another option can be to take the exam in the morning and come in to work in the afternoon (if that is logistically possible)? That way, you just need to request off a few hours rather than the whole day?

I know it's tough requesting time off at a new job— i started my current job in February and I had already had a week vacation in Florida planned for March. Unfortunately, the recruiter I worked with didn't bother to tell HR about it (even though she told me she had) so I felt like a HUGE jerk when I mentioned it and my manager was like “huh?????”. But it all worked out in the end 🙂

No it won't be a problem. You are a new hire, so it's not the end of world when you don't show up for a day, or even half a day if you take test in morning. People do it all the time. I mean what's going to happen? You missing out on some substantive testing? Come on.

Let your engagement senior know ahead, and just focus on passing.

Unless you are dealing with someone who is completely unreasonable and a total jerk then it shouldn't be an issue….especially if you take it in the morning and offer to come in after the exam.
