I am torn on what to do next in my accounting career and would like any advice/experience. I am 32 years old and have my CPA. Background is I worked in private accounting for about 5 years (a mix of private and publicly held companies). I got bored and went to work for a local accounting firm to do a variety of tax, audit, and business services for the past 3 years. I know this is not what I want to do long term. Right now I have the opportunity to go back to either a publicly traded company as an accounting manager overseeing 7 people or go to a company that is planning on going through an IPO. Both pay more than my current job, but my raises will probably be more at my current job. I can’t make up my mind between 1) staying at my job even though I am bored, but have a lot of flexibility in my time – and I will have to increase my hours during tax season only, 2) go to a public company where hours will be very busy during quarter end and a little at month end, growth will be slower paced since it is a steady growth company, or 3) go to a pre-IPO company where there will be a lot of growth opportunities and most likely a lot of hours. This would look great on resume, which is why I am leaning towards it. I am nervous about leaving the comforts of my current job, but I just don’t love it. I also have a child, who I want to be able to spend time with but I also want to be able to provide the financial support to allow him to be able to participate in activities/sports/camps. Any advice or experience is appreciated.
