NJ Work Experience question

So my direct supervisor is not a CPA but a woman at another department is. Having looked at the NJ license application, I couldn’t get any answers as to whether a coworker can sign off on your experience if your supervisor is not. My dad told me not to worry about it because he’s seen someone sign off for people who didn’t work for him (this is in NY). But I can’t help feeling paranoid that I’ll get a lot of red tape if this lady signs for me.

State dependent, but I think in Jersey they are supposed to be in charge of you somewhere up the line.

That said, you can simply secure your CPA from a different state if that is the case.

Same situation for me too. My boss who reviews my work doesn't have a CPA license but two other supervisors who are not over me do. I'm hoping this won't be too much of a problem to get them to sign off on my experience.

To update my story, I called the NJ state board and they said it would be OK as long as the other CPA knows what I do in my job. However, the lady on the phone seemed to be rushing and I couldn't get her name. And when I see stories on the forum of people being told something different from what their Board rep told them after their application got delayed, it's not exactly encouraging.

As another update, when I e-mailed the Board, they said the CPA who signs off has to be a supervisor. I guess I'll go with the written explanation to be on the safe side.
