Most of the accounting positions out there require at least 3 years of experience and a high proficiency in quickbooks or excel. I don’t have either..how do i get a job in accounting with 0 experience?

Keep looking. Once I was in your shoes. There are companies out there that are willing to teach you everything you need. However, pay will be less.

Is job market recovering? I see more and more job postings where they consider 5-6 years of experience as entry level.

I was in banking for 8 years prior to working for the state. I worked all through college, graduated with a 2.42. Not the greatest credentials for someone in accounting but I worked my butt off for it. It then took me 2 years, 27 interviews, hundreds of looked over resumes and reject emails before I was finally given my shot. The pay is ok, the benefits are better, the work life balance is great since it gives me the time I need to study, and it is also my foot into the door for something better once I attain the CPA.

Point is, I would apply for any all accounting position regardless of experience they “say” they require. Most say that just to weed out some of those that just aren't up to the job. Several of my interviews were for ones that wanted more years of experience. I didn't get the job, but I got the interview which tells me that they saw something enough to at least hear me out even with 0 accounting experience. Applying to those as well can only help you and not hurt you in my opinion. What's the worst that can happen besides not getting a call back?
