Noise Cancelling Headphones

Like the ones you see/use at the Prometric testing center, does anyone use these while studying? Reason I’m asking is that my family makes way too much noise while I’m in the basement studying in the mornings. I can always go into work early and study, but I’d prefer to be home. So would my wife. Anyone have these? If so, where could I get some? Wal-Mart?

    Thanks!

Hit up academy or amazon they have them for cheap. you can plug in some cheap headphones and put those over your ears and make some custom noise cancelling headphones for under 25 bucks.

Try something like these from Home Depot.

You can also buy foam ones to wear in your ear along with them. Should be dead silent with both of them on.

Pricey but worth it. Great for when flying as well.

I have distraction issues, so need to cancel out the noise all the time. I used both foam ear plugs and headphones for the exam, but just throw away foam ear plugs for studying.

The noise canceling headphones that cup over your ears work better than the ones that sit on your ears. I have the former ones by Bose. Bose came out with a new version of noise canceling ear plugs that are wired and work better than the old style that cup your ears and are rechargeable. There is a flexible plastic part that basically plugs your ear and fills up your ear cup.

You can also go with disposable foam ear plugs that work better than any noise canceling headphones. I use the type that you roll up, then stick in your ears. If you moisten them, they work even better.

I also bring my own Bose headphones to Prometrics, because I find them too big for my head.

It's not like I was listening to Five Finger Death Punch while studying. It was usually something classical.

mmmm….METAL! I consider myself a heavy metal accountant, but I can't listen to it while studying either. I can't do cash flows while headbanging lol. I also love Beethoven, Mussorgsky, Tchaikovsky and lots of other classical music. I really have never tried to listen to it while studying though. I worry about getting distracted. I have read it helps focus…is this true?

@Euro – I am commending you, not berating. Everyone is different. Thanks again for the advice!

@Duskfall – Have you ever listened to Sergey Prokofiev? He's classical and a complete monster of a composer.

Haha I must be tired. I have heard almost all of Prokofiev's work, I just wasn't putting two and two together. Romeo & Juliet, Peter and the Wolf, and his symphonies and sonatas played on Sirius all the time. He IS a beast! The Russians were the best at what they did!

“I also bring my own Bose headphones to Prometrics”

My NTS says personal headphones are prohibited. Are things different where you live, or does that Prometric center not care about the rules?

I have brought my own headphones and calculator and have not had a problem. I have a small head. The Prometrics ones slide off my head, so I use my own. I use my own calculator as well. The proctor just clears the memory. I’m not sure about the rules. But, I have not had a problem when I demonstrate that their’s fall off my head.

@Duskfall – Prokofiev is probably my favorite. “Battle on the Ice” by Prokofiev is probably the most brutal sequence I've ever heard. Not so sure its good for studying, but is phenomenal for gaming or working out. Another composer that I really like would have to be Shostokovich. There are so many good composers though.
