If you are deemed non-rehirable at a previous job (non accounting related job at a large corp)-would this affect future employment opportunities in public accounting?

how long did you work there? Is it absolutely necessary for you to put them as a reference or on your resume? I assume that it would hurt you simply because public accounting is so competitive, but I don't know for sure.

Inquire about the corporate HR policy of the company. Now days a lot of companies usually limit the information they give to the position you held and the salary. In these cases you just have to worry about a HR rep not following protocol. As a precaution make sure you give the corporate HR phone number and not the number of your recent manager.

I spoke to an ancient wise man who sent me on a mushroom induced journey through an ancient forest to find the key to passing the CPA exam. A talking spider monkey told me to throw the last of my drinking water in the dirt to find what I was looking for. So I followed his instructions and the following message appeared in the soil:

"Do 5000 multiple choice questions for each section"

In most states, they can't even discuss your status, re-hire status is mainly for internal purposes. Date hired, date left and income are usually all HR depts. will give out. Of course I wouldn't put down your boss as a reference if it ended like that.

    MBA,CMA,CPA, CFF?, ABV?

If you work at the corporate office I definitely wouldn't trust that they won't divulge that you aren't rehirable.

Thanks for the input, guys. Per Study Monk's suggestion, I called the HR dept. and they said they are not allowed to disclose that kind of information to 3rd parties…so does this mean that I'm in the clear?

@cpamommy i worked there for about 4 months and although 4 months isn't a very long time, it is absolutely necessary that i list this job on my resume bc i wouldn't know how to explain my employment gap if i left it out.

I think they don't divulge details such as re-hire-able status for legal reasons… not that you want to go down that road. It's a small world though! Try to keep that in mind.

You are in the clear if everyone follows protocol. As long as they call the HR department you should be fine. You can always have a friend call and act like a potential employer. If they slip up you can give them a warning. They are afraid of the liability of disclosing information that can be misleading. What some of the above posters are concerned with is that managers may somehow be contacted and not follow protocol. Your major concern should be that any personal references from that job don't slip up and give information that may be harmful. Also many employers will be suspicious if your old manager is not on your reference list.
