Not having good luck with big 4 (advise please)

So heres the deal. I went through undergrad not knowing if I wanted to do public accounting or go into law. Long story short I chose public accounting. I got my undergrad in accounting. I did NOT however, do an internship. I did study abroad and do externships with PWC and KPMG. I ended up graduating in accounting with a 4.17 accounting GPA and a 3.86 overall. I was also very involved on campus in BAP and a fraternity. I was an honor graduate and also a TA.

I then received a full scholarship to grad school and a position as a teacher for the undergraduate accounting class. The school was out of state and very far but I figured it would be easy to move back considering the size of the big 4 and all of my connections I made along the way.

I went through the recruitment process here in grad school 2 weeks ago and received 6 on campus interviews which i was happy about. They included all of the big 4. All of my interviews went very well. But now it has been over a week and all I have heard back is “we forwarded your information to the office of your choice”. A few of the firms even called and sent me letters to see if I would be willing to take a job in my current location. This is not what I want though. I came to grad school out of state hoping that I would have the option to move back to my family. I feel like I am at a loss.

Should I call the school in my home state and try to contact my local recruiters? I am not sure what to do at this point and I am getting worried that I made a mistake coming out of state. I could also transfer back home for my second semester of graduate school and try to apply there, but the recruitment is very weak in the spring.

How should I go about getting a job back home where I want to work? Apply there? Transfer back?

In your early interviews , did you specify clearly that which state you prefer to work at?

If you did, than they dont have vacancy in thats state and they are trying to push you off to your home state.

Correction: Even if you did, they recruit for THEIR office and would prefer to fill their openings first!

You might see if those recruiters will give you the contact info for the preferred destination recruiters, that way you can move the recruiting into your court–or at the very least provide some followup. Maybe even apply my first sentence in your approach, “Hey so and so, I realize you have recruiting for the XX Office at the top of your list, but I'd really appreciate it if you can provide followup…” or something along those lines

Biggest trick in Big 4, is that they are “global” firms. They are, but as a (prospective) employee it's not easy to apply elsewhere. They operate almost like a network of semi-independent firms. The local office, if they like you, will “refer” you to another office which will separately recruit you past the initial interview.

Your first option is to push for a job near home. They may not extend an offer if they don't have more openings, this is the risk you take.

Second option is to take an offer near school and then make a transfer after a year. Easier than trying for a different office while still in school.

Third option is to recruit and intend to go to the local (near school) office, and then after they extend the offer you can ask about transferring it to another office. If they like you enough, they will make it happen (depends on size of relative offices and flexibility in openings). If they say no, take local offer. If yes, then you're home free.
