I am nervous about the idea of taking the test again. I am 28 years old and working in private accounting. When I graduated college in 2003 I started studying for the exam with Kaplan (going to the classes). I also started working for a public accounting company. I had a lot of issues in my life back then. I was kind of pushed towards taking all 4 parts at once (This was before the test changed formats). I did not do well on the test (got 3 50 in the 50's and 1 in the 40's). That kind of killed my confidence. I never really enjoyed accounting . I was not feeling public so I left and started doing private accounting. Now I am at the point where I am realizing that I will prob be doing accounting for the rest of my life and want to get ahead. I am getting married in a year and want to be able to provide. I know that being a CPA is a huge difference. I have a huge fear of starting the process over. I don't have confidence that if I study that I will pass. I never really learned all the accounting material (in college I was suffering from alcoholism) and just did enough to get by. I also have ADHD which makes it hard to sit in the CPA review classes. I dont know if I would get much out of going to class after a day of work. What do you guys think I should do? Is there a study program that teaches the material somewhat? I did Kaplan originally and it was all Acronyms and stuff to remember which wasnt helpful to me. Thanks for listening to me poor my heart out. Any advice would be appreciated!!

offlineMemberMy advice to anyone in your position is that for something that takes this much of a committment, I think you YOURSELF, must know 100% fully that you want to do this. You don't sound like you really want to, and definitely sound unsure of yourself. I think confidence is big w/ the CPA exam.
You are going to have to invest a lot of time and money into this thing. So my advice is you either do it 110% or not at all. Think of the reasons why YOU want to pass this test. Those reasons have to motivate you and make you absolutely committed.

Yaeger Homestudy is exactly what you need. They "teach" you the concepts behind everything you need to know. I failed FAR and BEC with Bisk the first time with 60 & 72. I switched to Yaeger and received a 79 & 82 respectively. I just could not believe that my FAR score increased by an entire 19 points and BEC by 10! You should call Phil Yaeger and he will help you determine if his study program is what you need. Also, they are not as expensive as some of the other programs and they have a deal out now for the 2011 guarantee. Check them out. Use Yaeger Home Study for FAR, REG and BEC. Use Lambers (http://www.Lambers.com) for AUD. These are the best teaching courses for the CPA exams.

I was in a similiar boat when I started studying for the CPA exam. I really didn't think I could pass 'em but knew I wanted to give it a try. I knew if I never tried, I would regret never having at least attempting the exams. I struggled, holy hannah did I. But it's completely normal and as you read on here, the majority of people don't pass the exams on the first try. After 2 attemps on both REG, FAR, and BEC, I bought "you can if you think you can" and "the Power of positive thinking" by Norman Vincent Peale. Amazing books that helped me gain the confidence I needed to beat the exam. A year from the date I took Auditing I passed my last exam. Every struggle, every tear and late night study session was completely worth it!

offlineMemberKSGirl86, I am also using Yaeger Homestudy and been postponing my test for some reason. I just felt that I am never prepared to take this exam. Eveytime I would finished the last 2 modules - Governmental and Not-for-Profit modules - I have forgotten the first topics on the Wiley Book already. What was your study strategy? Like how many hours did you spent studying for FAR using the Yaeger Homestudy before you finally sit and passed the exam? Was the Wiley software helpful? ( I actually lost the DVD already) Did you just study the assigned MCQ's or did you study everything including the Sims?

offlineMemberDon't know what state you're trying to license in, but many, if not most, have an 18-month clock on passing all 4 parts. Either your test taking abilities and accounting skills have improved enough to pass easily, or there's some to a lot of studying for you to pass. If the latter's the case, like other posters have mentioned, you have to be confident that you're going to fully commit to get this done, with 18 months or less being the quickest, least painless route.
For most people, studying and passing requires a lot of mental discipline as well as careful scheduling and planning. If you feel that you'll be better able to focus by postponing your wedding, then talk to your future-spouse about this.
Try out lecture CDs/DVDs, that let you study at your own pace and time, and when you are most alert. (I know I'm usually wiped after work, and my work schedule was fairly unpredictable, which made going to class impractical. And how much can you retain in a consecutive 8 hour session on the weekend?). I also woke up early each morning to study for a few hours. This worked for me b/c I was fresh and alert in the morning, and there were no interruptions. Also, I could pause, get a snack, rewind, stop and continue the CD/DVD at any point, so I didn't lose any instructional value.
