Note taking is literally physically painful for me

I always was a big note taker and I do believe that writing things down helps commit them to memory (at least short-term).

I’m right handed and have had upper right shoulder pain for a long, long time, which has made handwriting somewhat stressful for me for a long time, but in very recent years it’s gotten worse. With computers there’s not as much need to hand write anymore, and typing is much more “balanced”. (But mouse-use is a big stressor.) I took a class recently and noticed I was just about the only one taking notes in a notebook, while almost everyone else was concentrating on their phones or tablets the whole time. How rude! I thought at first. Then it dawned on me: They must be taking notes on their mobile devices. I asked one of them it that’s what she was doing, and she said yes. Any tips on how to to this? I mean, I know about “Word”, but maybe there’s a better way? The only thing I would still have trouble with is the onscreen keyboards, I would have to add a physical keyboard if I wanted to do this in transit, and would have to be able to use the same program at home on my PC. Any other hints for pain-free, less- stressful ways of taking notes?

Hmmmm… Do u have an iPad you can buy an attachable keyboard and type notes that way. Probably a better option than using your cell phone. Have you tried writing with your left hand? Or can use the mouse on the computer with your left hand and just type in Microsoft word. If your just typing up notes you don't really need to use your mouse often. Also, take frequent breaks or take a pain reliever maybe half hour before you start writing your notes out. Another option is to voice record notes instead of typing them out. You can play them back anytime and you can learn that way. Lastly, maybe just tone down the writing a little. You don't have to write so much just write down key topics. Utilize voice record and re-read to make up for the gap 🙂 good luck

I have a Surface, and i think it is great for notes. Not only do they have a program specifically for notes, but since it is a tablet you can also touch the screen rather than use the mouse

I recorded lectures for almost every class I took in college. I would listen to the lectures over then I would transcribe them but only picking up the important parts. I used a couple of those recorded lectures to pass BEC. I had forgotten that I actually enjoyed Cost Acct in school. I, too, have handwriting issues and what I thought was a torn rotator cuff turned out to be a problem in my neck.
