When I got my official license in January, I paid hundreds of dollars (for ANNUAL memberships) to join these two (Georgia is my state). I just thought it was what you did when you passed (my husband has some perks – discounted insurance and such, through his AICPA membership, but there wasn’t anything I was aware of that would be an immediate benefit to me, besides a wall plaque!)

Little did I know, I’m getting renewal notices in the mail. Well, it was more like a month ago I got them. Apparently memberships end in the summer. So I paid full fees for only 6 months of membership. Is that right? Did I just do the timing wrong, and should I have waited? Needless to say, I’m dropping my memberships this time around because I’m not coughing up that money again when I just did it in January. I’ll look into it again next summer, when I have had time to replenish my funds!

I think they're typically prorated once you hit the half-year mark. So if the membership year begins in June, once you hit December, membership is half price. When you joined up that should've been spelled out for you.

I joined the AICPA and MNCPA since I figured it doesn't hurt to have the magazines they send and the networking opportunities/cheap CPE. Plus access to job boards and stuff like that. After a year, who knows, maybe I'll decide it wasn't worth the cash.

    FAR - 79 (11/27/13)
    AUD - 76 (2/1/14)
    REG - 77 (5/30/14)
    BEC - 88 (7/18/14)

    MN Ethics - 100% (3/9/14)

    AND DONE! 8/1/14

I haven't joined either, yet, but I'm looking forward to the ‘free' subscription to the Journal of Accountancy.

I'm a member of both AICPA and CTCPA. CTCPA dues are due June 30 and AICPA July 31.

In Big 4 I was required to join AICPA. They also reimbursed for state society fees so I joined CTCPA too. I recently switched jobs and my new job has agreed to reimburse me for my dues to both societies so I will keep up with the memberships. I haven't seen much benefit to being a member, other than I feel like I should be.

As long as my job keeps reimbursing the dues, I will keep my memberships. Just feel like I should be a part of them.

If I ever have to start paying myself I would drop CTCPA and probably keep AICPA just because it seems like a good idea to me.
