Anyone have a PMP certification or taking the PMP exam? I’m looking at getting that on the side (through work). Is it true you can either use real-life projects for the required hours OR class hours of exam prep? I also saw the exam was 4 hours and 200 MCQs. After the CPA, I’m pretty sure I can handle any sort of testing. Any advice would be appreciated.

I'm going to be studying for the Project Manager Professional (PMP) after I finish the CPA, and am in a PMP Class class now.

I was able to sit down with an expert who helped me turn my working experience (IT, non-PM) into PM experience. Even though I never had the title of project manager, I did a lot of project management stuff – initiating, planning, executing, monitoring, closing. Read the description of your PMP application – each of those 5 areas has things you most likely have done in a job that did not have project manager as its title.

For example, did you routinely submit status reports to your manager? That's monitoring. Did you sit in kickoff meetings and read initial documentation? That's initiating. Did you actually do things that were part of the project plan? That's executing. As a project wrapped up, did you document lessons learned and other things? That's closing.

All you need is a minimum of 4500 hours, over 36 months, in the last 8 years.

As long as you have a manager or consulting firm who can back up your experience and can verify that you've done the stuff, if the PMI audits you, you won't have to worry. I recommend telling your contacts what you're putting down in your application.

kandisjoy, why do you have your CA CPA number in your signature? People can look up your personal info from the website. Never know who's out there so be safe.

I don't have enough PM experience so I'm thinking about the CAPM Certified Associate in Project Management. Any advice whether I should do this?

I will be getting my CAPM certificate hopefully this May. I do not have the work experience to take the PMP test so the CAPM is the one available to me. I work in an industry where so many people around me are getting it so I am familiar with the experience from their stories. One thing that amazes me is they get their score that day…unlike us CPA candidates, that would be so cool!

With people talking about PIMPs, this is not a good thread to ask what is the HO scale when it refers to trains 🙂

@emandtea – I am taking a “boot camp” type class through becker in march to get the PMP certification. I guess I'll be using their materials. Not sure though how well they prepare you for the exam. I know the class and instructor will help complete the application which I hear is extremely tough. You'll need to outline the details of a project specifically and that's just a small part of the application. The class will also count towards your required 35 hours needed to sit for the exam. I believe it's around $995 for members and $1095 for nonmembers. Not sure if that helps, but that's what I've figured out so far.

I am studying for the PMP – for free (course content delivered by SYU and underwritten in full by JP Morgan Chase) since I am a veteran.
