Have a job interview Monday for a position as a controller of a CPA firm. Does anybody know of any significant differences between that and being a controller anywhere else? It almost seems intimidating like everybody who you work with is mentally auditing every journal entry lol! And while I know firsthand all controllers put in long hours, wonder if they’re even longer at a CPA firm if for peer pressure that “everyone else stays until 8pm”. If you work in a firm that has a controller how do you perceive him/her? Thanks!

Wow, sounds like a heavily responsible job, hopefully with great pay. I was going to ask about qualifications, but I see you've passed the exam already. But good luck sounds like an awesome position to have.

    It begins with a 75

Thanks TN, I don't have high hopes for this one but it never hurts to give it a best effort. I have my license but NO PUBLIC experience (in MA you can get a non-reporting license with a masters). Also interviewing 2 hours later for CFO of a huge animal hospital. That's the one I REALLY want. Love animals and never figured I could somehow combine that with accounting. Same day I have an interview with a publishing co to write accounting educational material lol! I'm nothing if not diverse…..

You go! These all sounds like great positions! I think the animal Hospital sounds the best too!

To answer you actual question, we did not have a controller when i was in public but we did have a CFO. She seemed fine, and I wasn't high enough up to have to much info, however i do know that sometimes the partners would be getting involved to help her out. I know if that was me it would have driven me crazy.

    Finally done!

This is my 2nd attempt at the exam, I had two parts passed (failed many) and I stupidly quit, big mistake. Now I'm back and with a vengeance!

The only thing I can add is that the Controller of our Local office is always concerned with correct charging of hours. Obviously, it's the main cash inflow a firm has.

So I'd expect a lot of the concerns to be around that as well as expense policy adherence.

    Thanks lsync.

The publishing co was a big bust. Something like $18/hour. They wanted me. no thanks!

The controller job was with with a recruiter. My position on recruiters stands, the ones who are GOOD are exceptions to the rule. This guy was some smart recent college grad with all the professional experience of my dog. He asked what my current salary is and I told him. He said this job is “too much of a salary increase” and its not realistic to expect to increase my salary by more than 10%. I asked if my qualifications and education were a match and he agreed. So basically I don't make enough to take this job? LOL. I explained the last time I changed jobs, I increased my salary by over 40% so theres no basis to his presumptions. Onward and upward.

The animal hospital job was also with a recruiter, who was presumably late for cheerleading practice LOL, but she was a good kid, very positive and upbeat and thinks I am a good match for this job. She's just checking my references and will schedule an interview with the management of the hospital. So that's something…………..
