OT: Don't know whether to be proud or scared

My 16 year old son took a practice ACT and an aptitude test in March. We got the results back in the mail today and I was floored when I saw the results.

The practice ACT is scaled 1-25 with 25 being the highest. Son’s score was 24 and they estimated if he took the actual ACT in the next 6 months his score would be in the 99th percentile. So yeah, pretty proud there!

Then I read the results of the aptitude test. That kind of scared me. I’ve talked about my son before, he’s a 16 year old computer geek. He refers to himself as a geek, so I’m not being mean to him by saying that. In the past when people tell him not to call himself a geek he reminds them that Bill Gates is a geek and people usually shut up. Son is teaching me to write computer code, but that story is in another thread. He doesn’t play online games anymore. He and a few online friends, write their own games. They got sick of facebook/twitter/tumblr so they are writing their own social media site, with son doing most of the coding. So he is completely immersed in computers and all things virtual. This is what his aptitude test results said:

Strong mathematical and logical/critical thinking skills: Best suited to a job in Accounting; potential careers include CPA, CFO, and Financial analyst.

WHAT? Do I laugh or cry at these results?

That's awesome and really impressive! Forget CFO! He should be striving for CEO of his own company!

HAHA I would laugh…I'm not sure how much of your CPA journey had an impact on him, but I doubt he's going to want to go down the CPA route after witnessing just how much it takes to pass. Of course your struggle showed him he can do anything he puts his mind to, but he may not want to put is mind to being a CPA after all he saw you go through.

His computer prowess should not be underestimated. That is a clutch skill to have and should he decide to major in computer science, as I suspect he will, he has the makings of great career in technology!

Kudos to him…he's blessed to be a naturally good test taker.

    computers, computers, computers!!

Keep him chugging on those. CPA is for a different kind of “weird” person.

I'm in a software company, and the programmers are all making way more than me… consistent throughout our clientele as well. Top accounting dog does really well, but then the IT person is always in the top 5 paid people.

    REG- (1) 76
    FAR- (2) 64, (5)74, (7)83 (Over achiever!)
    AUD- (3) 70, (4) 75
    BEC- (6) 75

Using Ninja MCQ, NINJA Notes, Audio, Flashcards and BLITZ, and 2014 Wiley Text

    FAR - (61,63)
    AUD - (68)

    Keep Calm and RTMFQ

Accountant, what is best in life? To crush your MCQs, see them driven before you, and hear the lamentation of their SIMS!

@mla – Um, primary educator = ME! Home school was the best thing I ever did for him. He learned to write code on his own by watching youtube and searching the internet. He learned HOW to learn, not just the topics covered on some standardized test that cannot possibly measure his potential. K12.com rocks!!! If anyone is even contemplating a home school option, then look at K12.com.

@tomq04 – He is currently looking for colleges right now. I know he wants out of Louisiana. Why I don't know, but he does and I've got to support that independence even if it kills me. What schools did the programmers that you work with attend? I can't afford to send him to MIT, unless he gets a ton of scholarships, and that ain't happening, but I want to make sure he gets a quality degree that will get him a good job so that he can take care of his crazy mother or at least find me a nursing home that allows liquor. LOL
