I had an interviewer ask me if they could call my current boss for a reference. I said i would rather he didnt since my boss was unaware of my job search but that HR can confirm my employment position and dates. He then agreed that he was thinking only as a last step if they “were getting ready to give me an offer”. Is this normal? and how would you handle that request? obviously i would rather they didnt call my current boss (even tho i would get a good reference) because i dont really want them knowing i was interviewing if i didnt end up getting the job

just curious what your all’s experience has been

I had a similar experience. It's quite nerve racking, even if your boss loves you.

I would either ask them to contact other coworkers of yours (fellow staff mates you trust and who don't care that you're looking) or, if they don't like that option, allow them to contact your boss only if you have come to an agreement on compensation and all other aspects of the position.

I ended up having my boss give me a final reference before they offered the job, and she was happy for me. Not sure if it will work so smoothly for you, but it worked out for me. I gave them my boss without knowing compensation and got lucky because the compensation was well above what I requested….doubt I would take that risk again.

I find it kind of awkward and unnatural when they ask for your current employer as a reference. Some HR folks are quite understanding though and do allow other current coworkers whom you may feel more comfortable with as an option.

I always tell employers they can call my current employer ONLY when an offer has been made and accepted contingent on that one point.

If they don't understand the confidentiality of your job search I can assure you it is not the kind of employer you want to work for.

By the way that point has not once been a deal breaker–other things sure, but its never cost me an offer.
