I have been in accounting for almost 20 years now. More recently I have been in a leadership position. Some experiences I have done well at, while others I have had some challenges. If your in a leadership position, what do you do to inspire your team or if you are in a support position, what motivates you to be better? Just food for thought.

Leadership: meet with each person you manage at least once every two weeks. Get to know them. Show them you care.

    Licensed Florida CPA:
    B: 71, 73, 79
    A: 83
    R: 78 (expired), 77
    F: 74, 74, 80

    It's finally freaking over.

I've only been in leadership roles in a school setting, but I think valuing input, showing gratitude, and giving credit privately and publicly.

I have never been in a leadership position in my professional career, besides intern training, but I am so very motivated by watching friends and co-workers overcome their personal hardships. It's really inspiring to watch someone go through legit hard times and pull through like a champ. It makes me feel like I must never take for granted all that I have, and if I am having a bad day, it's squat compared to the sh*t some others have to go to.

The good leaders I've seen are humble and patient. But mostly humble!

    REG - 65, 70, 80!
    BEC - 35, 62, 79!
    AUD - 73, 75!
    FAR - 65, 73, 70, 75! DONE.

My biggest thing is promoting team work. I have 3 staff accountants, 1 junion staff accountant, 1 tax accountant, and 1 accounting clerk that report to me. I make sure they all understand that we are all here for each other. If the tax accountant needs help then we all pitch in and get the property taxes mailed out or pull stuff for sales tax audits. If a staff accountant needs help we all pitch in and work on her banks, JEs, or reconciliations. If the accounting clerk needs help we all pitch in and file SAM registrations and answer the accounting line. I fill in for the employees when they are out or on medical leave as much as I can before I add more work to my other employees. I try to set a good example by not being above any of the tasks that could be considered menial. I don't ask my employees to work any harder or longer than I work because let's face it…we get paid more and should work more. I feel that this shows them that they aren't taken for granted, they will get help if needed and as long as they are willing to help others, and it does make for a better work environment when they work together. It doesn't always work out and there are times when some get a bit big for their britches, but I don't encourage that or play favorites. For my employees motivation is usually equal to compensation, which is hard when we didn't get raises for 4 years. Accounting can get very boring year after year so I try to involve them in as many projects as possible so they feel like they are doing more than just the day to day and month to month stuff. It makes them feel involved and less robotic.
