I know you guys don’t care, because like me once upon a time, you are entirely too focused on your CPA study materials, but I’m pretty excited because I passed part I of the CIA exam. Since I’m a CPA, I already qualify for part IV, so essentially, I’m already halfway there! Just wanted to celebrate with my CPA fam.

Haha thanks guys. I may or may have thrown back a few already 😉 gonna make for an interesting work day tomorrow. Although, I guess I shouldn't be too excited…I only put in about 12 hours worth of work so it's not like the CPA where I ate, slept, and dreamt CPA study materials lol.

@Jeff — Well I specialize in internal audit so the CIA was a niche certification that, believe it or not, adds value to what I do.

@Mini — Part of what we have to do as an internal audit activity is consider the possibility of fraud at all levels within the engagement, so I was considering the CFE. I remember you told me about the CFF, but I actually think you have to have specialized forensic experience to achieve that designation if I remember right. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought that was the case.

Yeah but their definition of forensic is pretty broad. My business valuation experience qualifies as forensic experience. That being said, the CFE is probably more up your alley based on what you do. I don't know what the CFE requirements are. Take one step at a time. Focus on that CIA. Your studying kind of reminds me of the CDFA designation I got. The first test was based on a 60 page book. Studied about 7 hours and got a 93 on the exam. Lol.

My buddy (also a CPA/CIA/CMA) recommends the CISA if you want to make some bank with your CPA/CIA

@Mini — Yeah, I mean I don't need to be a “fraud expert” (i.e., a CFF), but I'd like to be certified as like a CFE sometime in the near future. But I'm not too sure about that right now…I'm just focusing on the CIA (like you pointed out). I'm planning to start studying for part II tomorrow and taking that part in about a week, possibly part III in three weeks due to its length (I think it's the longest section). I'm not focused on the alphabet soup as I am adding value to my own career. Especially when my firm pays for the materials and exam fees…can't argue with that

@Jeff — I've actually heard that before (that CISAs get PAAAAIIIIIIIIDDDDD). The problem is our internal audit function differentiates between business risk (me) and technology risk, and I don't want the CISA to get people to think I'm a systems auditor. While I would value the ability to recognize issues in systems auditing, I don't want to be pigeon-holed in that area. You know what I mean?

The CFE is cake compared to the CPA exam. I had taken a Fraud class as part of my graduate degree, so I was already familar with most of the material. That being said, I still think it would be a fairly easy designation for someone without any background knowledge. If anyone has any questions about the CFE, feel free to shoot me a note.

Congrats on passing the 1st part of the CIA Baseball. What study material are you using?

    @BaseballCPA

That's so great you are getting CIA. It makes me feel that I should do it, too.

@Baseball, how long have you been in Internal Audit? I'm an Internal Auditor as well and have been thinking about the CIA and CISA once I pass REG.

@Jokami — Thanks! Sounds like you have quite an ambitious certification road ahead of you! I wish you the best of luck in attaining all the ones that you desire and that will help you advance in your career. I will tell you that the CIA is a relaxing day at the beach compared to the Auschwitz of the CPA…so if you do decide to move in that direction, don't stress too much!

@Gifuto724 — That's good information about the CFE, thank you for that. I will definitely keep you in mind as a potential resource as I move forward in achieving that designation in the future (if I decide to pursue it, that is). Thank you for the kind words, I am using the IIA's study materials, which is essentially just the books for each part as well as access to the online site for MCQs. I thought it was pretty bare bones at first, but upon taking/passing the first part, it seems more than sufficient.

@Yankee — Thanks! I forgot how exciting it is to get that score back! That shot of adrenaline when you are about to find out whether you passed or failed!

@CPAGenie — Thank you! I think that if you are considering it, you definitely should. First of all, it's not very difficult, and as a result, not very time consuming. So if you have a job, family, children, etc., it's something you could easily fit into your schedule. If you do decide to pursue it, good luck! Feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions about the process/parts.

@Jenuno01 — I've been in Internal Audit for approximately 9 months lol. Don't have a ton of experience yet, but I knew that the achieving such a niche certification can only benefit me. My ulterior motive was to shame this girl that started at the same time as me. She's a complete idiot; no, she makes the monkeys at the zoo who play with their own crap look like friggin' rocket scientists. She went to a terrible school for accounting, no certifications at all, but yet, she might be the most arrogant person I know (and LOOK WHO'S SAYING THAT!!!!). Every day I have to talk to her is another step closer I get to defenestrating myself from the 48th floor of the building I work in. So, part of my rationalization was that, hey, I already have my CPA, why not get the CIA too and make her look even more unqualified next to me. I'm hoping they ship her off to Siberia…maybe she can “one-up” some arctic hippos (exist?) before she gets eaten. Well…my explanation to you segued into quite the rant, but I hope it was at least mildly helpful. How long have you been working in Internal Audit, Jenuno?

My rant sort of made me think, how many of you work with someone that you absolutely cannot stand?

When you guys say that CISAs make bank, what exactly do you define as bank? I mean in relation to a CPA at a similar firm.

LOL! @Baseball – I can totally relate with your monkey-brained coworker. I've been in Internal Audit for almost 2 years now (graduated college December 2011). For the most part it’s been great. I also plan on getting as many certifications as my boss will pay for mainly because as an Internal Auditor, I get to work with many seasoned executives by auditing their processes and making recommendations. Most of these people have been doing their jobs for an insane amount of time, so getting them to adjust to a change is a quite a challenge. When I first started, I could tell many people did not take me serious because they saw how young I am, but once they found out I was almost becoming a CPA…you cannot imagine how much more respect I get, they even approach me for professional opinions lol. Having certifications not only makes you look better in paper, it also changes the way people think of you and builds up a lot of confidence! What industry are you in?
