Anyone have any good suggestions for a vacation place? My bf and I are celebrating me finishing the exams by taking a vacation this summer…I’m just not sure where to go! We’ve both traveled a decent amount, so I’d like something a little off the beaten path (so no Disney, Hawaii, Vegas, etc.), but still within the contiguous US. Any thoughts/ideas? Thanks!

It depends on where you are currently located, where you have been, what you like to do.. etc. I personally recommend TripAdvisor.com for planning trips since it is a great vacation review site and they have a forum dedicated to traveling. I live in Georgia so some of my personal summer favorites are:

Savannah, Georgia: Great for shopping, walking tours, historic sites, architecture, and nightlife
St. Augustine, Florida: Is a classy beach town (not a party/trashed beach)
Gatlinburg, Tennessee (smokey mountains): hiking, nature, waterfalls, cabin rentals
San Antonio, Texas: Excellent food, shopping, with water parks and tubing within an hour drive.

I went to Alaska last summer, it's a pretty expensive trip. We camped every night for two weeks, it got pretty cold. It's an incredible place to be, but it's not a relaxing vacation. You hike a lot, but it's very unique.

Hawaii is a pretty sweet place, I second that.

Can't go wrong relaxing in Florida.

It is hard to make suggestions without knowing what you like to do on vacation. Are you outdoorsy?

We stayed at a lodge in the grand canyon and it was really great.
I love San Diego, mission beach in particular.
Seattle is a pretty cool place, it can probably satisfy both indoor and outdoor preferences. They had a foody tour where you walked around and ate at all the hot spots … I didn't get to do it but really wanted to.
I am in the SF bay area and it is a pretty cool place to visit. I'd recommend Half Moon Bay and take a trip into SF. SF also has a foody tour, I seen a groupon for it.

Almost always from my phone... please excuse my typos!

Florida Keys! Fly into Miami and then rent a car and drive about 2.5 hours to Key Largo. Stay at the Hilton there and then do a day trip into Key West, unless you're a real party person then you might stay in Key West but the drive is longer so be careful about timing when you leave Key West to make your flight in Miami. Honestly, the drive is so easy.

It is truly a tropical destination, I loved it! I am very anti-Florida and if I am going to the beach, I want to go somewhere I can get a stamp in my passport but the Keys were perfect. Very tropical, affordable, you don't have to worry about not speaking the language or feeling uncomfortable in a cab, no currency exchange issues, and great if you don't have a passport. It was so relaxing.

But I second Savannah, GA, San Antonio, TX and San Francisco, those are all great cities where you can find lots to do!

I've seen lots of commercials for Nassau Bahamas lately. A couple of years ago around MLK day, I jetsetted to Nassau on a whim for a 3 day weekend and it was nice to get out the cold winter. I stayed at the Hilton right next to Senor Frog and rode a ferry over to Atlantis. It was a nice quick getaway. Customs was easy too.

    Florida Keys/Key West
    Fripp Island, SC

We did both in the past two years, and I cannot stop thinking about the memories I made during each vacation.

I'd also mention Myrtle Beach, SC but the water can be very cold this time of year. Not sure about Fripp Island. It's also very commercialized and great for families so maybe not the way you want to spend some alone time with the bf

Fripp is a private island with beautiful secluded beaches. The only thing commercialized about it is the rental agencies that help the property owners rent out their homes. And the deer come right up to your front door.

Thanks for the great suggestions! Lots of good ideas! This is the first time I have ever planned a week-long vacation that is completely of my choosing, and there are so many good options it's hard to narrow down to just one.
