OT: Workplace recycling and "green" business environments

How much does this mean to you? Is it important in deciding whether to take (or leave) a job? Any cool things/efforts your office or place of employment does to help not destroy the planet?

I work in a new “green” office building, but we don’t have any recycling for bottles/plastics/cans/etc (we do however have paper recycling, which doesn’t really hold that much water considering we aren’t paperless in the first place). Yesterday I emailed HR to inquire about recycling bins I might just be missing/not know of and mentioned I had started a small bin for myself and co-workers at my cube to take home for recycling (and offered to help start/initiate a new program for recycking if they needed support), and they basically responded with “there are no plans for the near future for recycling, and we reccommend that you discotinue the recycling at your cube”. I’m pretty upset about it! Am I being unreasonable in thinking that this is so bad? Note, we are huge company with a huge office so it’s not just 10-20 people throwing away recyclable items everyday, it’s hundreds (if not 1000+?)

    REG - 65, 70, 80!
    BEC - 35, 62, 79!
    AUD - 73, 75!
    FAR - 65, 73, 70, 75! DONE.

My entire building doesn't recycle… it's kind of lame. I've never known a building that doesn't do it. My office is only 12 people, and the building is probably less than 100, but I feel bad throwing out cans. It's pretty lame that HR would discourage you.

The only thing I can do to make a difference is not use my “personal” garbage can at my desk, which they empty every day even if there's only one thing in it, and get up to throw everything out in the kitchen garbage can. I've been doing this for around 5 months and probably saved over 100 small plastic garbage bags. Everything helps!

So my building has recycle and compost bins LOL (c'mon in San Francisco).

Funny thing though, I was at a client site, they had the standard garbage and recycling, well being the only people there when the cleaning guy showed up, I saw him dump both bins into his trash can and move on LOL. I'm all for recycling, but the irony is hilarious

As for your situation, I think there are better things to get upset about. Or, if you're that bothered, and depending on the size of the building, talk to the property management.
