Part Time jobs

    Hi guys,

I was wondering if any of you held part time jobs while working full time. I plan on traveling all this summer before re-locating to a new city (ambitious, i know) and i really need to save up some cash. My problem is that i’ve had a bit too much time in the accounting field so leaving it off my resume gives me a big job gap. So what part time jobs have you had previously?

I was thinking about doing the H&R block classes and after work or on weekends being able to work for them. I’ve volunteered doing taxes in the past but tbh don’t have any real certification nor a ton of knowledge on it. They pay i think it’s $9 an hour, but extra cash is extra cash. I’ve applied as a part time bookkeeper but told many i could only work on weekends, no luck with that just yet. i thought about retail, but that’s kind of hard to get into considering they prefer people who have worked retail for years.

Any suggestions? Any other part time accounting related jobs you took in your spare time that i’m not considering? Or tips on making my resume look more attractive to non accounting related jobs?

You can do H&R block without taking the classes, if you can pass their online exam which is open book and very generous on time. Or you can try websites like Elance or taskrabbit for freelance bookkeeping gigs.

And retail will take anybody who's 98.6 degrees. I do Kohls every Christmas because Sundays are time and a half, employee discount is fabulous and I get all my Christmas shopping done on breaks lol!

@mla116 i'll look into those website, and see about H&R block again. i used to work at a dept store when i was 16 and i always swore on my life i'd never go back to one. lol but now i think i'm desperate enough for a part time job, and dept stores really are the easiest places to get hired. i'll bite my tongue this winter. thanks

99% of my accounting clients come from Elance and they are the reason I'm so successful. The problem is, if you're new, it can be hard to break into it. I started on there over 6 years ago when it was still somewhat getting off the ground. Plus, they have people overseas that bid $3/hr for work which sometimes kicks those of us who charge livable wages out of the competition.

You could tutor accounting if you live near a college or college Algebra. My husband works full time and wait tables at night for our grocery/play money. It's not easy work behind a desk, but you can easily make $10+/hour. He prefers places like IHOP and Denny's so he can work third shift and you have quick turnover on the tables, but he said the place with the best management that was really willing to work with his schedule was Olive Garden. He made the best money at Chili's because of the happy hour and you could go there right after work and do a 6-10 shift.

Nicole, mla's already addressed this somewhat, but I'm really curious about this comment: “i thought about retail, but that's kind of hard to get into considering they prefer people who have worked retail for years.” Are you meaning retail like cashier/stockperson/etc. or are you meaning retail management? Cause I have yet to see a retail job that expected years of experience! I worked in a grocery store where the only requirements were that you could show up to work, not stink too badly, and pass a drug test…and after you were hired, the drug test part was pretty much waived. Sad thing is that I'm being pretty honest. 😐 However, if you're willing to do something like this, I doubt you'll be turned away for lack of retail experience…! However, if you meant retail management, then they do usually look for some experience of some sort in the retail world, but I doubt you'd find a management position that was part-time anyway.

In general, I'd suggest seeking a part-time job that's a bit more active – like Mamabear's husband has – to help balance out the hours of sitting in front of a desk. For your health's sake, something like waiting tables or stocking grocery shelves would be much better than another desk-job. The only thing I miss about my grocery store job is that I was able to be active while working, and now I'm doing good if I get out and walk around the building for 5 minutes a couple times a week. Sitting all day isn't healthy, so if I get a 2nd job, I'd definitely be looking for something active!

You could also try tutor.com and brainfuse.com, they hire tutors to work online and they both pay around $10/hr. You set your own schedule for them.

    Very helpful post.

I'd like to hear more if anyone about people doing free lance work such as tutoring, bookkeeping, taxes, and other accounting services.

Yikes! $10 per hour for tutoring? You can post an ad on Craigslist in a college town for help with FAR 1 and you can probably charge about $20 per hour. Don't forget those self-employment taxes though. =)
