Sorry for posting yet another thread (thanks for all the help/congratulations btw)

But I’m looking for a part time job that will help me pay for my upcoming grad school program(I’m halfway through The Total Money Makeover book and there’s no way I’m taking out more debt!) While I’m not above flipping burgers, babysitting or the like, it would be ideal to get some part time/contract work in something accounting related.

I’ve tried Craigslist/Indeed/Simply Hired, but I haven’t had luck finding a website that posts lots of part time bookkeeping/accounting work. It’d be nice to maintain a few small business clients that need bookkeeping work done once or twice a month. I’m not looking to get rich here…I really only need these jobs to cover the cost of grad school…anything extra is gravy.

All suggestions/experiences posted are greatly appreciated 🙂

Forget job listings. I'd say find a local networking group in your area. Many times these are small businesses who need a bookkeeper or know someone who does. Along with Marketing, it's probably one of the most in demand services for a start up or a small company.

    @ tomq04: Los Angeles

@ Mayo: I've tried that…seems like none of these small business owners value good bookkeeping enough to want to actually PAY for it

I've been trying the same thing. ….it's slow going as a start up. I had a small amount of luck getting one time quickbooks setup by emailing LinkedIn contacts that are business owners.

What kind of groups or events are you attending? How are you framing your services? I once talked to a bookkeeper who would preempt the description of her job with a good reason for having good books,

“Well, a lot of my clients need bank loans, so we provide a high enough level of accounting that they're used to and expect”

Not sure if this works, but she seemed to think it did. She was pretty knowledgable of the types of clients and their needs. So during introductions she'd always ask the other person about their business first. After listening, she'd customize her own description of her business according to who she was talking to.

Some businesses need clean accounting for loans; others need tax help; some need both; some need general business advice. It goes on and on.

Just to add…most businesses need bookeeping for a specific reason. Otherwise they're content with using a cash basis of accounting.

If you figure out what that reason is and you're good.

Write up cover letters and send the cover letter along with your résumé to places. A company may hire you even if they're not advertising. Good luck!

    Passed all sections.
