Well, I got my score yesterday, and to my pleasant surprise I scored a 99 on audit! I am not one to gloat, but I am really curious– does this happen often?

I guess I take for granted the fact that I have been studying accountancy for past three years and took a very solid review course (NIU) with Gleim. But never would have expected to get a 99. Hence once I found out, I decided to join here and inquire.

I knew of this forum because I stumbled accross it googling CPA exam trivia while I preparred for Audit.

    FAR is next!

Congrats! A 99 is obviously fantastic. Granted, I'm almost certain Audit is the “easiest” exam to score a 99, or at least, that's my perception from this website. I've seen at least a few posters on this board who have had rather mediocre (relatively yet passing which is really all that matters unless you're legitimately going for the Watts Award) scores on other exams who have scored a 99 on Audit. I've never seen anything like that for the other exams.

Granted, I've scored pretty well on BEC and FAR, yet I'm finding audit extremely difficult to study for. For BEC and FAR, I could reason my way through the concepts while Audit just seems like rote memorization of material that I am not familiar with. Any advice on how to score well on this exam?

I Think some people prefer science & math while others prefer history & literature. The people who prefer math like problem solving and do better on REG and FAR. The people who are good at memorizing did well in history and literature and are more wired for AUD and BEC.

From a theoretical standpoint, I do NOT recommed memorizing for audit. You must figure out a way to conceptualize the material so you know why you are doing what your are doing. If you are able to do that you can more easily reason your way through questions and answers by taking what you know about an area and applying it.

I also answered about 1700 gleim questions, plus all the sims, as well as NIU multiple choice questions sprinkled throughout their review books and NIU's online quizzes. So doing a lot of MC was clutch for me. I definitey recognized questions on the exam and IMO, Gleim is actually tougher than the exam so it prepares you very well.

I guess in the end though the reason I probably did so well is because I had audit as an undergrad almost three years ago, then I had it again a year ago as a graduate, and then again during the review course. Repitition is the key to sucess with the CPA exam!

    Hope that helps!

That makes sense although I'd say BEC is much, much different than Audit. BEC is all based on logic while Audit is primarily just memorization. I understand that BEC has a lot of formulas, but the processes behind BEC are all intuitive. Furthermore, simply knowing the formulas doesn't guarantee you'll score high (although it'd likely mean you'll at least pass). I'd put BEC in a category by itself and maybe kind of with FAR which is based on logic. REG is more memorization but it also includes applying rules which requires some logic. On the far spectrum is Audit which is merely memorization (I'm only on A1 and A2 right now – maybe it's different later? I hope so).

Thanks CPA.boom! I'm definitely trying to conceptualize the material. I mean I'm not ONLY memorizing. I'm also trying to understand it, but that also means memorizing it for me as I'm not familiar with the material and am not able to just pull it off the top of my head.

No problem! Yea there is definitely some memorization involved, but I ALWAYS look for the justification… sometimes thinking about it at a deeper level helps you recall it.

Is that allowed? I did take a screen shot w/ my iPhone of it..I don't want to do something that is not permitted though.
