Passed CPA, Masters – No Interview!!!

    Hey, I’m currently in a master’s program for my 150 credits. I have a great GPA and have passed the CPA. I applied to all the Big 4 for summer internships, but they aren’t even interviewing me! What is wrong?? It’s so disheartening to know that you worked so hard, and that people who are much less on in their CPA careers are getting the interviews instead of you. I thought taking and passing the CPA was a good initiative? Do they think I’m too good for them? I know of a couple of people in the same situation. It has nothing to do with interview skills, which I have, because they won’t even interview!

    You go to any recruiting events? Or are you submitting through their website?

    Yes, I went to a couple of events, emailed the recruiters, and I applied through the school campus recruiting site. The Big 4 interviews on campus.

    It will be more painful not to even have an interview. From what I understand, getting an interview means you have a good shot. For example, if 100 people applied, and 20 positions are available, they would give 35 people interviews and hire 20 of them.

    @john….I guess youre right about the interview stuff, passing all the CPA exam is a big deal and should really put you on top of most applicants. Are you only applying to big 4 firms ? Do you have experience ? if not, why dont you try entry level positions specifically jobs that have a preference for a CPA candidate ? Have you checked your resume ?

    I got rejected for first round interviews for McGladrey before, I think that's more painful than not getting an interview because you and your hopes and dreams for long-term success for this company just ended like that. All I can say is move on and try with other companies.

    I talked a friend yesterday who works for CBIZ (Top 100 Mid-tier #7 firm) yesterday, and because we already established a good connection with each other, she told her supervisor to schedule me for an interview. How awesome is that? Connect to people, and attend campus recruiting events for the best opportunity.

    REG = 58 (02-20-13), 75 (05-01-13)
    AUD = 67 (05-29-13), 79 (08-29-13)
    BEC = 83 (07-31-13)
    FAR = 72 (10-29-13), 69 (02-27-14), 73 (04-16-14), 81(08-13-14)

    Study Materials = Becker 2013 + Wiley Online Test Bank
    (75%) On my Way to a CPA (minus the experience requirement)!

    How would you describe your interactions with the recruiters at the booth?

    Hi, how are you, here is my resume, thank you for your business card, goodbye.

    or

    Developed, interesting conversation?

    Point being, they schedule interviews more on personal interaction than resume material. Everyone (well lots anyways) have great resumes. Having the CPA exams done puts you ahead of a lot of people, but is not necessarily going to guarantee you an interview. The recruiters schedule interviews based on, 1. What was the person's personality like, can we see them at our firm? 2. Does the resume meet our minimum requirements. That is, the most personable person with a 2.5GPA isnt going to get called and the person who hardly spoke to them with a 4.0GPA probably isnt going to get called either.

    I know what you all will think, that I'm some big hotshot accounting nerd who has zero personality and an aura of haughtiness. I can assure you that nothing can be further from the truth. I have some experience, not much, but definitely something.

    The meetings at the career fair were actually very good. We had good conversation, and I emailed afterwards. I still have a chance with at least 1 of the Big 4, so I'm trying to be optimistic.

    I applied for a couple of midsize, but their deadlines are often later, as they don't always hire 10 months in advance.
