Passed the exam and wondering about work experience

    I just passed the CPA exam today in California and am now wondering about the 1 year work experience. I have not begun work for that requirement and am hoping to move to New York to find a job. Would that work experience in NY count for the CA requirement or would I have to transfer my exam credits over to NY and apply for licensing through the NY board of accountancy?

    Thanks for all your help!

    I'm in a similar situation! Although I haven't passed all sections yet lol

    I would love to know some advices on out-of-state experience too.

    Thanks!

    Same here – Going for a NJ license (where I went to grad school so education lines up better with NJ requirements) but working in Maryland. Will have been working directly under a licensed Maryland CPA for 4+ years, so I'm hoping the NJ board does not require experience specifically under a licensed NJ CPA.

    I'm assuming each state board handles it differently. I know people in my office who have recieved a PA license working under another state's licensed CPA.

    I'm curious how strict they are going to be if it is part of their requirements to have experience under that state's licensed CPA, or if the board would use some judgement on your experience.

    @kennybe how did your licensing work out? I am in exactly same boat. Live work in Ni, passed exams and worked under MD CPA. Any advice is appreciated.

    MarkNJ – I've got one more exam to go in August so I'll probably be applying for the license in the Fall sometime.

    I'll be interested to see how it works for you. If they give problems about non-NJ CPA supervision, I may try to see if there is anyone above me in our regional office with a NJ license that will sign off on experience (even though they aren't necessarily directly supervising me).

    When it comes to experience what I see is that the sign needs to be done by an active CPA in any jurisdiction. So I don't think it's an issue.

    I second what CPA soon stated. I had an opportunity to work under an accountant licensed in Montana (I am in CA) and the people at the BOA said it was fine as long as they are active.

    Almost always from my phone... please excuse my typos!

    @kennybe @cpa soon@ MaLoTu,

    thx will let you know. I know the regs in nj state “under a NJ licensed CPA” but I assume that was before reciprocity and portability so hopefully it all works out. I have worked under the CPA for 20 years so that has to count for something. (I am 46 by the way). Worst case I will just get licensed in MD I guess. 😉

    @MaLoTu I can see you are a licensed CPA in CA. Did you get a form for verifying the license of your supervisor because you obtained experience out of California? Would like to know if the CBA required that in your case.
