It is possible. It never happened to me personally but happened where I worked about 2 years before I started there. Basically when your choices are to take the pay cut or be laid off, you take the cut. I know there are rules to be followed (like they can't select certain employees whose pay to cut and leave others at their current wage) but sadly it does happen.

I've never worked at an accounting firm, but my company did a 5% pay cut for all non-executives and a 10% paycut for executives 6 years ago. The thing that bothered me about it was when they gave it back a year later they wanted us to jump up and down for joy like we got raises. No–we just got our initial pay back. Then we went several more years without raises. It happens and you either jump ship or you stick it out. They have made up for it since then so I'm glad I stuck it out because I'm not sure I could find this kind of stability and flexibility anywhere else right now. I know a couple of people left during that time and they have since tried to come back because they got laid off at their new jobs. It's not worth the gamble in my situation, but it really depends on the person and how many other people you are responsible for as to whether you deal with it or move on.

a couple years before i started at my current company everyone had to take 2 weeks of mandatory unpaid leave per quarter. Its a bigger company so i think they were trying to do the pay cuts but do it a little more favorably to the employee

@ taxman89 OMG I would love to have an extra two weeks off per year, even if it was unpaid. Two weeks of vacation is simply not enough. :/

it was 2 weeks per quarter (8weeks a year) so it was a substantial pay but but most people had the same response you did (i wasnt there yet). And i agree that 2 weeks is too little lol
