Perfect time to re-evaluate our goals!

So with the close of 2012, I reflect on my exam experience. My summer nights consisted of my friend and me doing lectures, multiple choice questions, simulations. While we sit loath it during the preparation phase, after wards, the support and words of assurance from others that we are not going crazy and the end result is the promise that we are better; academically, mentally and career. As Pavlov suggests, we condition ourselves for good tasks will yield good results, and while my exam preparation was good, it was not good enough to give me the passing grade. 1st time = 69. 2nd time = 74. I plan to sit for FAR the second week in January to get the year off to an exciting start and so I close this year with a goal. My goal is to continue my CPA exam and by the end of 2013 I will be certified. I choose to begin my new year on the right foot. I start off my new year by resting and preparing for a year that will be spent with many nights studying.

I am right there with you. I started this journey with my first exam last January and never thought it would drag out this long.

I AM GOING TO BE A CPA IN 2013! There is no excuse not to be!

I have two left and I know I can finish them off with enough preparation. Being free from studying is something that I could not even fathom a year ago..especially after I received failing score after failing score. I got my first passing scores this last quarter and it was such a motivator. I now have something to work towards – being done and NOT letting those credits expire!

Also, among the goal of passing, I want to get back into shape. This exam has caused me from getting 4 days a week of working out/being able to run 5 miles easily to being lucky if I get one day in a week and struggling to finish two miles. I used to be really into running and would like to run another half marathon by the fall.

In the spirit of the looming heards of enthusiastic workout newbies likely to crowd your gym this coming month, I have this input that I was thinking about over the weekend:

Studying is just like losing weight.

You dive into it with high energy, drive and goals. But after even just a few days, you get discouraged because you don't see any weight loss/you're getting 40-50%s on your sets of MCQs. The journey is so long and SO SLOW, that when you're 1 month in, you might be 2 lbs down/now getting 70% but it's such little progress (in your mind) that you're still equally as dissatisfied and frustrated with yourself. “This is a waste of time” you think, all the time. Then 2 months in, you're 5 pounds down/ getting 80%s, but feel like you should be at your weight goal by now and getting every single MCQ question right…. so still, you're frustrated.

Take a step back and compare to day 1 – think about how much better you really are now at this point in time. Neither of these things come overnight; studying especially, for me, is simply putting in the time…….sooo much time. After a while, it does start to stick in my head despite my thinking that I am still “not getting it”. Put in the time and dedicate yourself to it (be honest with yourself and truly put in tons and tons of hours) and without you fully realizing it, you'll be ready to sit and pass the exam. Or in the case of weight loss: hey, I finally lost 10lbs and it's time to buy $200 jeans. 😀

    REG - 65, 70, 80!
    BEC - 35, 62, 79!
    AUD - 73, 75!
    FAR - 65, 73, 70, 75! DONE.
