I work for a small CPA firm (less than 30 people) and just had my performance review today. This was my 1st year and here’s how I ended up with:

    Raise: $2,000/annual

    Bonus: $7,000

    Comments: Very positive, nothing negative.

I’m very happy with the bonus, but not sure if the increment is standard in acctg firms. What is everyone’s experience been like?

That bonus is really nice especially for first year.

Usually 1st years don't get any bonuses unless you pass your cpa. The annual raise depends on what your salary is.

You really have to look at it in terms percentage more than dollars. $2,000 is 2% of $100,000 which 2% is sort of normal in the corporate world. Usually bonuses in corporate, once you hit that level, start in the 10% range so while you raise would have been normal, your bonus would have been lower than maximum.

    Journey Started - January 2015
    FAR - 4/2015 - Passed
    AUD - 7/2015 - Passed
    BEC - 8/2015 - Passed
    REG - 11/12/2015 - Passed

    Thanks, guys!!

So based on percentage, I got 12.96% bonus and about 3.8% raise!! I passed my exams before I started here, if that makes any differences!!

And they have special “passing your CPA in 1st year” bonus that would be different than yearly (after-tax season) bonus!

@jbarwick No offense but i'm 99.9% sure that first year in public accounting don't start at $100,000. Not sure where you are getting your stats from but corporate world “normal” is usually around 3%- 5% while public is usually higher. Regardless the OP got a great bonus considering even the big 4 pays 5k for passing the the CPA in first year.

I'd say the answers to your questions are highly dependent on what part to the country you are in. For example, that raise might be pretty pathetic for New York or Los Angeles, but would probably be pretty decent in a small to medium-sized southern state town. What is the location of your firm?

I work for a firm that's about twice the size of the OP's (60ish people) My first year, I received a 8% (about 4.5k) raise but only a $500 bonus.
