Personal Exemption

If parents don’t claim their child as a dependent, can the child take a personal exemption?

The IRS website says “one exemption per taxpayer unless he/she can be claimed as a dependent by another person”. I thought at first yes, they can take a personal exemption because the parents aren’t claiming them but technicallyyy parents can claim them, they just chose not to.

So can he/she take the personal exemption or not?

If the child files a return and the parents don't claim a dependent? Yeah, the child then could claim a personal exemption on their own return.

i recall Becker saying if a child is eligible to be claimed by another, the child cannot take a personal exemption.

The child can as long as the parents don't claim the child on their own return.

    Can someone confirm this?

Yes, if the child uses their exemption then parent can't claim them. If the parents use their exemption, then child can't claim it. Either or. Parents can use it if child doesn't need it based on their income….but only if they meet the tests of course.

The wording “CAN be claimed as a dependent by another” is extremely confusing. What if they CAN be claimed but aren't? I think the wording sucks.

    AUD - 88
    REG - 86
    BEC - 74, 1/2015
    FAR - 2/2015
