Pretest questions and grading

If you get all 15 (or 12) pretest questions correct and get 15+ questions that count wrong, is that the same as getting 30+ questions wrong score wise? The AICPA website says that pretest questions are not scored, but that just seems really unfair for those who unluckily got the pretest questions right!

Are there any ways to guess which ones might be pretest? I’ve heard people speculate that the seemingly out of left field questions are pretests, but what if you didn’t have any questions that were that random?

What is the tax preparer penalty for failing to sign a return?

    a) $25

    b) $50

    c) $75

    d) $100

If there is a question like the above where there is a clear correct answer, does that automatically mean that it is not a pretest? With a question like this it was probably one sentence out of the entire book. Would you classify this question as hard or medium?

I know no one knows for sure, but I am just curious as to what everyone’s thoughts are!

There's no way to determine which questions are pretest. They're not going to be obviously easy because they're being tested to be used on future exams. Every question on your exam is worth a predetermined number of points and pretest questions are worth zero points so getting all right or wrong doesn't matter to your score it only determines if the question will be used on a future exam. Has nothing to do with fair, very few things about this while process are.

If you know the answer it is an easy question. If you don't know the answer it is hard and you have to guess.

I noticed that a lot on the CPA test.
