Private to public?

    hi all!

So I’m in a bit of a tough situation and really need some help and advice.

I graduated from college a year ago, and started working in private accounting at a large software company. After a year I’m just realize this is not for me and id enjoy public accounting a lot more. I’ve just finished all of my exams and trying to apply for jobs.

Here is the issue – I can’t apply for entry level positions because I’m not in school, and I can’t apply as experienced professions because my experience is not related to audit or tax.

Has anyone ever successfully switched from private accounting to public accounting? Or know anyone who has? I’d really appreciate if you can share your experiences. Also, do any of the bigger firms accept applications for entry level positions from someone not in school?

Thanks so much for all your help!

I believe that if you have not worked in public accounting, then you would apply/get hired at entry-level. It doesn't matter if you are in school or not. Can anyone confirm?

Generally speaking, you would have to start in an entry level position coming from private and going into public. You might be able to sell yourself as an experienced hire if you have a years worth of experience and have passed all of the exams.

I have 4 years experience in private accounting. I was looking at public accounting in the past to see what was out there. Tried to sell my experience and the fact that I had completed the exams. Interviewed with multiple firms and on average the offers were 10-15k higher than they were offering for entry level positions. Just some thoughts for others who are considering the switch…its all about providing value to them and selling yourself as a competent, working professional.

Firms say that they make little to no money on people in their first year or two of public accounting because the work still needs to be reviewed in greater detail since you are learning. However, if you come off as competent and ahead of the curve, they may be inclined to take a chance that you will get up-to-speed earlier than someone who is entry-level.

You shouldn't have a problem applying for an entry level position. I know someone at McGladrey that has a similar background as you described. He got hired very soon after completing his exams. Having the test under your belt will be a huge help you shouldn't have a hard time if you are OK with going in at entry level.

I moved from private to public about 14 months ago. I came in at staff level but quickly moved up since I had industry experience. Just know that even though you haven't had the public experience yet, you will usually pick it up much quicker than those fresh out of school. It is definitely a change in practice, schedule, and stress, but well worth the experience.

Hmm I am having trouble finding entry level positions on company websites. Most of them are senior type positions. Most website give you two options, campus or experienced. I've considered even doing cold calling to explain my unique situation.

Do you have any suggestions advise or tips that my help me find a position? Thanks so much I really appreciate everyone's input.

I know that the private experienced hires that start entry level at my firm (medium-sized, local firm) usually get promoted more quickly and have higher starting pay. I'm sure you could negotiate that in (even possibly starting promotion eligible) with your offer. That being said, average period to promotion at my firm is 2-3 years, so forfeiting 1 year of external experience and getting promoted earlier would probably be worth it. Especially if you know you'd rather do public.

    Thanks all for the input!!!

It sounds like I might have a better chance at a mid sized regional firm right? I'll definitely give that a try. In terms of pay, what should I expect? I'm located in California. Around 60k with bonus?

Hmm, I work at a firm in OC and my pay is lower than that. So maybe as an experienced hire, it should be that much. I know big 4 is around 60k but mid-sized firm should be above 50 but lower than 60.

Pay will depend on which level you come in (staff 1, 2, or senior 1).

Chances are, it will be staff 1.. at least that's my guess.

If I were you, I'd apply everywhere. Your chances aren't something that you will know ahead of time. You could have horrible chances at a mid/small firm if they have no openings, and you could have fantastic odds at a big 4 if they are very understaffed. If you know someone at the firm, they could probably give you more insight, but otherwise you would just have to apply and find out.

No one likes rejection, but it's part of the game. Remember that interviewing is a learning process for you as well. Maybe you interview with two big 4 firms and four mid/small firms. Let's say you end up getting an offer from a mid firm and accepting it, but realize through interviews that you would really like to work in big 4 someday. That's very good to know! After a year or two, you can and should certainly try again. Take every chance you have to interview as a personal learning opportunity.

When I ended up leaving audit, I interviewed for more than a handful of corporate accounting positions. I learned that with a few exceptions (maybe reporting or technical accounting/research), I would not be happy in a GL accounting role. It would bore my mind and I would be looking to get out within 12-18 months. That could be good if the company is on board, but not good if they aren't.
