Private vs public accounting

I’ve worked in two public accounting firms for about a year. The first firm was a bigger firm where there wasn’t a whole lot of work for me to do. I was let go because of lack of work. I found a job to start on 1/2/14 this year and have been there since. I have got great experience so far this year. But, I’m not sure if public accounting is for me. I don’t get a lot of time off and i’m not making a lot in my opinion. Is it not right quitting a job when the firm has a lot invested in me so far? I’m involved in a lot of tax returns right now and other jobs. I don’t want to piss them off. If i’m not leaving for another public accounting firm they should understand? Is there a minimum time period I should stay at a job?

The reason why I say this is because I was offered a job at the state. Its within the criminal investigation unit. It could be kind of interesting and the benefits seem a lot better. And, the pay would be better in the beginning and lower in the end. But, I would have a lot more free time.
