I own a small CPA firm and the way I read the rules, anyone that participates in the preparation of returns for money has to have a PTIN. I made even my secretary get a PTIN, just to make sure that I was covering all angles. No, she does not prepare or sign returns, but she does enter names and socials for new clients into my tax software to start a client file. To me that is close enough to the line that I want to make sure that I am covered. $65 is not a big deal for the peace of mind against some dumb federal bureaucrat….

How to understand if you are required to sign the return or not? How to know if you are truly responsible for signing the returns you worked on? I am trying to understand it. Because I was hired by a firm and asked to sign returns I worked on. Thank you!

I work at a small firm and have a PTIN. I don't sign any of the income tax returns but I sign the Payroll returns.

I am looking for info on signing tax returns with your own PTIN. I prepare tax returns based on the documents in the folder. I do not see the client. I am an employee. Can the employer make me to sign the tax return? Or the person that reviews the tax return must sign? Thank you!
