Public Accounting Tax Manager Qualifications

I have been working for a private company now for 7 years as a CFO. I just recently passed all of my CPA exams and have been an IRS enrolled agent for a few years. I am considering leaving the private company and applying to some of the bigger public accounting firms (maybe one of the big 4) as a Tax Manager since most of my experience is in that field.

Any of you who have worked for a public company, what are usually the qualifications that public accounting firms look for when hiring a Tax Manager and what the responsibilities are of Tax Managers? Thanks

    Sandro-

It's been told to me that one needs a CPA to be a manager at Big 4. If you do not yet have the license, they may want to start you at a Senior level until you have the actual license.

Disclosure- I am not Big 4, but my wife is a manager at a Big 4 firm.

EA is fine to qualify for a manager for some firms- you're fine either way since you passed all 4 parts.

Your responsibilities would include managing engagements, talking to clients, and telling the staff that they have to work this upcoming weekend.

I just passed all of my exams and have submitted all of the documents to the state. I should be licensed within the next few weeks. How is your wife's working schedule? I know during busy season its very busy but how is it throughout the rest of the year, does she have to work a lot of overtime?

Thank you and good luck on your CPA exams.

Her schedule is rough. She works from home like 50% of the time, but when she isn't she's all over the place and her schedule is erratic, but generally slow in the summer.

She's been pressing me to jump ship where I am, but I do forensics & litigation consulting (which I love) at a small firm and my hours are great (a 50 hour workweek generally means somebody screwed something up) and I don't have to travel at all.

The money is def better at Big 4, though.

Thanks for the good mojo. I'm hoping to have these bad boys wrapped up by the end of July.

Working from home 50% of the time and a slow summer. Now that is ROUGH.

    Couldnt imagine such a grind.
