Here's a little story to make you feel better…
I was at a group job interview a few years ago when the economy was bad. They asked one candidate what the gross margin was for a P&L on the board. She said $60k. They said yes, but what is it as a percentage? Her face turned red, she couldn't answer. They said “$60 out of $100, what is that as a percentage?” Her face got more and more red and she slunk down in her chair. They asked who could answer, and we all raised our hands. They called on a CPA (supposedly) and she proudly stated, “I cannot tell you exactly, but it's something around 58.9%”. They reiterated 60/100. She did not have a better answer. Finally they asked the room, and we all stated (in chorus) “SIXTY PERCENT!!!”
I always think about that person and the fact that if she could pass the CPA without (evidently) having retained an so much as an elementary school education, I could do it, and so can you. Not to mention the CPA firm that's currently auditing us (a huge, nationally recognized firm) is sending over auditors who don't understand the basics of internal control, who are also CPAs. Then there's that person who asked if they could pass the exam getting only a 75% on the MCQ without answering the SIMs….. If these people can pass, surely we can pass!
(I'm going to fail because I said all this.)
