Hey all! Sort of having a quarter-life career crisis here, seeking some advice:

I have worked as an Auditor for 2.5 years, both with a governmental entity and with a Big-4 CPA firm. During that time I invested the time and passed the CPA exam on the first attempt. My career path has been on a pretty solid upward trajectory. However, I was never all that excited about the work. For months, just waking up and going into the office felt like a chore to me until finally I just had the realization that I don’t want to work in this industry anymore. My first thought was to try and switch from Auditing into a different area of Accounting such as Tax or Advisory, but I don’t think it would make much difference about my feelings. I just don’t find the field of Accountancy engaging enough to stay in it for the rest of my career.

I am looking to make the jump into IT, specifically Software Development. I have some prior programming knowledge (mainly from when I was a teenager), but I have started teaching myself programming independently through online resources and through community college courses. I also hope to start in a Masters program this summer. From what I have learned so far, I find programming to be a much more interesting and creative endeavor than anything I ever did as an Auditor. My question is have any of you ever worked in Programming? How easy is it to get your foot in the door when you have an Accounting background and a few courses behind your belt. By this upcoming Fall, I anticipate having a strong enough background in Java to be able to handle an entry-level coding job. Also, how would you say the firm cultures compared to the culture of CPA firms (another reason I am looking to leave the Accounting industry is a culture that I perceive as extremely negative).
